United Press International
IRVING — A game-breaking defensive play featuring tackles Randy
White and Larry Cole helped bail out the struggling Dallas offense
Sunday, bringing the Cowboys a 14-10 win over Washington and
moving them a step closer to the NFL playoffs.
Dallas built its record to 9-3, still two games back of the NFC East
leading Philadelphia Eagles, while the Redskins slumped to 3-9.
The Cowboys turned the ball over on six occasions and failed time after
time to expand on an early 7-3 lead.
But in the space of a few seconds the Cowboys’ defense struck despite a
freakish turn in the final 90 seconds that allowed the Redskins a last
chance for victory and brought Dallas its third straight win over its
traditional rival.
Facing a third and 11 from his own 48 on the opening play of the fourth
quarter, Washington quarterback Mike Kruczek started back to throw.
But Kruczek, filling in for the injured Joe Theismann, was almost
immediately hit by White.
White, who had easily beaten offensive guard Ron Saul, caused the ball
to pop out of Kruczek’s hands and directly into the arms of Cole.
The ball ricocheted off Cole’s hands, bounced off his face mask and
then back into his hands, enabling him to ramble 43 yards for what was
officially recorded as an interception return.
It was the fourth touchdown of Cole’s 13-year career, all of them
coming against the Redskins.
Dallas’ only other touchdown came on a 3-yard run by Tony Dorsett on
Dallas’ second possession, that score being set up by a 52-yard punt
return from James Jones.
Washington, choosing to use a conservative offense, managed a 34-
yard field goal by Mark Moseley in the second quarter and an 8-yard
run by Wilbur Jackson with 68 seconds to play.

Aggie women come in 4
at Conference Fall Me
By RICK STOLLE
Battalion Staff
The fourth-seeded Texas A&M
women’s tennis team came in fourth
in the Southwest Conference Fall
meet at the Lakeway Tennis Center
in Austin Sunday.
The University of Texas defeated
Southern Methodist 6-3 to take the
title. The rest of the teams in the
tournament came in as follows: Texas
Christian University, A&M, Rice
and Arkansas in a tie for fifth and
Texas Tech and the University of
Houston in a tie for seventh.
In the first round, the Aggie women
defeated Tech 5-4 despite the loss of
top player Liliana Fernandez to a
tom shoulder muscle. The two teams
split the singles matches but A&M
won the two doubles matches they
had to win. They were forced to play
with one new doubles team due to
the loss of Fernandez.
For the remainder of the tourna
ment, the number two doubles was
the top team. The third team was
number two and coach Jan Cannon
had to make up a third doubles team
from the other players she took to the
tournament.
