Sports THE BATTALION Page 11 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1980 Novv n wait final standings Aggies’ soccer team tied by Owls By RICHARD OLIVER Sports Editor The 1980 season has been full of surprises for Telmo Franco and his Texas A&M University men’s soccer team, and one of the bigger surprises came Saturday. The Aggies roared into Houston intent on taking the Rice Owls and clinching a third place finish in the fall SWC race. Instead, the Owls rose up and handed A&M a 1-1 tie and threw a wrench into the Aggies’ finish in front of approximately 300 fans. Texas A&M initially went to Hous ton hoping for a second place SWC finish, but Texas won two games last weekend against Texas Tech and Arkansas to take that position. “We played not too good, not too bad,” said Franco Sunday night. “We played a good game. Rice is not as weak as their record indicates. We had a strong defense, but our offen sive line is not as strong as our defen sive line just yet. We need the same quality both ways.” A&M scored on a Paul Winston goal, his ninth of the year, five mi nutes into the game. The Aggies are now 6-3-3 for the season and await the results of other weekend league games to determine their final sea son standing. “They (Aggie players) are very happy for their contribution to the A&M soccer program,” Franco said. “There’s no way anyone should feel bad. We’re planning to keep playing. We’ll play in some tournaments. We re anxious to get more experi ence in the fall.” Franco said several soccer coaches from the Dallas area have contacted him about the program, and two players have notified the head coach they will be transferring to A&M to join the Aggies in the spring. The Aggies will play Lamar Satur day in Beaumont. wWomen ’s soccer team takes mrth at Austin Tournament Fernandez scores win over Summell started lid, “I wk! became was down cl !;Th e top-seeded Texas A&M women’s soccer team at so uptMLj j n s t r etch this weekend and finished a surpris- t moreklBy p 00r f our th in the Austin Tournament in Austin, same oeaB^g Aggies were forced to play three games in a row day morning beginning at 9:30 and lost two of them, deluding a consolation final loss to Memorial of *1 , .slon anorexial; f irs t loss came to The Sting, which allowed the ;ies only 14 shots on goal in winning, 1-0. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, so the two teams were allowed five shots on goal apiece from 35 yards away. Memorial won that contest 1-0 to take the victory. Borgeson was angry over the tournament format, which forced the Aggies to play three straight games despite being top-seeded. “It didn’t seem like they (tournament officials) gave any consideration to the fact we were top-seeded,” he said. Texas A&M’s sophomore sensa tion Liliana Fernandez scored a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win Saturday over North Texas State’s Gwenn Summell to take the championship at the April Sound Invitational at Lake Conroe. “She (Fernandez) just wore her (Summell) down,” said Aggie Head Coach Jan Cannon. “She’s so proud of herself ... she’s outlasting some people. We’ve got her on a weight running program.” vum IWOIHK ACCIES!
