Page 12 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1980 Junior guard quits Ag team By RICHARD OLIVER Sports Editor Junior guard Rob Wright quit the Texas A&M University basketball team Saturday because he said he “wasn’t getting a fair chance at all." Wright has seen limited action over the past two years, but was competing in fall workouts for guard, a position the Aggies are desper ately trying to fill due to the loss of stars Dave Goff and David Britton to graduation. “They (coaches) told me they weren’t going to let me play this year,” said Wright Tuesday. “He (Head Coach Shelby Metcalf) had me on third team and never let me switch jerseys and move up. I was always third string.” Wright said he will transfer to the University ofTexas-Arlington next semester. “There’s nothing I can do about it,” he said. “There’s no way all seven of the other guards could be better than me. “Two weeks before the workouts started, he (Metcalf) told me everything was fine. Now, it’s stay and don’t play or transfer. I still can’t understand.” Other guards trying for the open positions include Tyrone Ladson, Reggie Roberts, Michael Brown, Milton Woodley, Bruce Suter, Jay McHugh and Roy Jones. Wright said several players in the past have been put in what he calls Metcalfs “doghouse.” Metcalf, however, scoffs at that idea. “He’s not in my doghouse,” he said. “I don’t even have a doghouse. I have a dog, but he stays in the house with us. “It sounds to me like he’s pretty sincere. He was pretty near accu rate. All I told Robbie is ‘you’re just not good enough.’ There’s no personality problem or anything. I’ve just got to play the best players. I hope he finds good luck wherever he goes.” Wright claims, however, that he wasn’t given a chance to prove his worth. “There are a whole lot of people who want to see me play, ” he said. "I probably have just as much fans as David (Britton) and David Goff did. The games I played last year, I played well. The people I’ve talked to are very disappointed. “I won’t be able to get a scholarship. I can play there (UT-A) or here too, for that matter.” Texas A&M 17th in Stanford meet Texas A&M faded somewhat in the final round and finished 17th in the Stanford Fall Invitational golf tournament last Saturday. Arizona State won the champion ship with a seven-stroke margin over runner-up Oklahoma State. The Wildcats posted a 718 to 725 for the Cowboys. The Aggies, who were seventh going into the final round, were led by Bart Cobb who had a 54-hole total of 216. Other Aggie scores: Brad Jones 221, Richard Cromwell 230, Danny Briggs 231, Gary Krueger 233 and Paul Oglesby 233. It was by far the worst perform ance of the year for the Aggies. Texas A&M led off the season in early September with a second place finish in the Fall Southwest Confer ence Golf Tournament, and on Sept. 23 took second once again, five strokes behind Houston, in the Houston Jr.-Sr. College Meet at the Woodlands Golf Course in Houston. The Aggies now look toward the Harvey Penick Invitational in Austin Nov. 10-12. Keough given award United Press International NEW YORK — In Matt Keough’s eyes, the recent fortunes of the Oak land A s have been reflected in his own record. “I was the epitome of our ballclub the last two years,” he said. “I was the prime example of the club being bad last year and good this year. ” Keough, victim of a 14-game los ing streak one season ago while the A’s had the worst record in baseball, Monday was named the UPI Com eback Player of the Year in the Amer ican League for 1980. The 25-year- old right-hander received 17 of 50 votes for rebounding from a dis astrous 2-17 record to post a 16-13 season with a 2.92 ERA. Oakland, meanwhile, under man ager Billy Martin, improved enough to win 83 games this year. Martin’s influence on Keough was obvious earlier in the pitcher’s career, in 1978, when Martin was managing the New York Yankees and Nix announces schedule for indoor track season CUSTOM SOUNDS is having a birth day sale! The skipper named Keough to the All-Star team, and the experience of playing that one game for Martin buoyed Keough so much that he re joiced upon hearing Martin would manage the A’s in 1980. “He gave me confidence,” Keough said. “I was never geared to complete baseball games. But he said, ‘When you go out there, the ballgame’s yours.’” Keough responded by pitching 20 complete games and two shutouts in 32 starts. Reliever Rich Gossage, who bounced back from a thumb in jury to help pitch the New York Yankees to the East Division title this year, finished a distant second in the voting with four votes. Kansas City left-hander Larry Cura, Boston catcher Carlton Fisk, and righthand ers Steve Stone of Baltimore and Mike Norris of Oakland received three votes each.
