Mailer to try acting United Press International HOLLYWOOD — Author Nor man Mailer, who failed in his attempt to run for mayor of New York City a dozen years ago, will take a stab at an acting career with a role in “Ragtime.” Mailer will play Stanford White, the New York socialite-architect in volved in a scandalous 1906 mur der, in the film being directed by Milos Forman from E. L. Doctorow’s best-selling novel. Mailer will join a cast which fea tures such oldtime Hollywood stars as James Cagney, Donald O’Con nor and Pat O’Brien. TV season trimmed United Press International HOLLYWOOD — The CBS and NBC television networks have announced plans to trim the num ber of episodes of some of their series due to the Screen Actors Guild strike which has delayed the 1980-81 series by at least two months. ABC-TV, however, announced it had no plans to reduce the number of segments of any of its shows as yet. One ABC spokesman said a decision will be reached after the new season begins.
