NEW YORK — He issued the
typical responses of a manager, dis
missing credit for his team’s success
and redirecting it to the players.
But Bill Virdon, who was named
UPI’s National League Manager of
the Year Monday for the second
straight season, played a key role in
the first pennant in the history of
the Houston Astros.
ggtpy^
“I appreciate the honor and I
want to thank the writers who voted
for me,” said Virdon. “Managers al
ways get a lot of the credit when it’s
the players who did the outstanding
job.”

Shively to sponsor Aggie Quadrathalon
The Aggie Quadrathalon, a multi
faceted competition that involves
swimming, running, peddling and
paddling, will take place Nov. 8.
The event, sponsored by Texas
A&M University Professor Mike
Shively, will occur on Carter Lake
outside of College Station at 1 p.m.
Shively is the past president of the
Texas Canoe Racing Association,
and that organization has sanctioned
the event. Shively is a nationally
recognized canoist.
The Quadrathalon will be set up
in four parts: a swimming race in
water four to six feet deep (distance
is yet to be determined), a five-
kilometer run, an eight-kilometer
bike race and a one-kilometer canoe
race on the Lake.
For more information and direc
tions, call Shively at 5-2828 or 693-
7418.
Entries may be filled out the day
of the event, but early entries will
be appreciated. The entry fee is $5.
The Texas A&M Racquetball
Club will sponsor a tournament this
weekend on the campus.
The tournament begins Friday
and ends Sunday. Deadline to enter
the event is Thursday at 5 p.m. Call
846-1808 to enter.
All four events will be run sepa
rately with short rest periods be
tween them. Participants may com
pete in all of the events, or any one
of them separately. Awards will be
handed out for winners in each
separate event, and others will be
given out for overall performances
of those who participate in all the
events.
