Students’
excuses
juvenile

By TERRI COULSON
Battalion Reporter
If you happen to miss a day of class
and you want an excused absence,
one way of getting it is by obtaining
an excuse from the A.P. Beutel
Health Center.
“If a student comes over here and
asks for a class excuse we don’t ques
tion him for being honest,” Dr. C. B.
Goswick, director of the health cen
ter, said. “Or if he’s here and has
been seen in the clinic and he asks for
an excuse, we give it to him.”
Professors question the excuses all
the time, he said. “As far as I’m con
cerned the responsibility is theirs
anyway. ”
“I think they (the excuses) are
juvenile and degrading to students,”
Goswick said.
“I mean, really, it’s like taking a
note from mother when you go back
to the first grade class after you’ve
missed a day or something.That’s
just not fit for around here.”
According to Texas A&M Univer
sity Regulations, it is a student’s re
sponsibility to provide evidence to
the instructor to substantiate the
reason for the absence.
When an absence is authorized,
the instructor can provide the stu
dent an opportunity to make up
tests, assignments or other work mis
sed or else provide a satisfactory
alternative.
There are extenuating circumst
ances that nobody can anticipate, but
it should be between the the profes
sor and the student to make an ad
justment, Goswick said.
“Now surely, if a student had
acute appendicitis or had his leg
broken or something like that, and
say he missed his first exam and
something happened to make him
miss another one, surely that profes
sor would understand the situation
and would make some kind of adjust
ment and let him make it up,” he
said.
