United Press International
JTAMPA, Fla. — Coach John
McKay’s plan to have wide receiver
Cferald Carter suited up for his Tam
pa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s game
against the 49ers at San Francisco
has been derailed by the New York
Jets.
■Carter was a ninth round draft pick
o|the Bugs out of Texas A&M Uni
versity this year.
■The Bucs dropped Carter in the
next-to-last cut in preseason and
sought to re-sign him this week. But
to do so, Carter had to clear procedu
ral recall waivers.
,,The Bucs said Carter was claimed
W the Jets Thursday afternoon, just
two minutes before the claiming
deadline.
feThe Bucs sought to return him to
Be roster after they waived fourth-
year wide receiver Larry Mucker
Wednesday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER — The 2-0
women take on Rice in Houston Sun
day morning at 11.

The Texas A&M University men’s
soccer team limped home from the
state tournament last spring a little
dejected after coming in fourth.
This year, however, the team is
quite rejuvenated and is prospering
from the instruction of a new coach,
Telmo Franco of Peru.
Franco has taken the young Aggies
and molded them into one of the
more respectable teams in the
Southwest Conference Soccer
League. This weekend, that young
team takes on one of the strongest
teams in the country, SMU.
The Mustangs come into College
Station as the No. 4 team in the na
tion and a tradition of fine soccer
teams behind them. The two teams
clash at 11:30 Saturday morning on
the drill field.
A&M, however, is upset-minded.
The Aggies have already knocked
off the perennially powerful Baylor
Bears this year, and have tied
Arkansas.
“The team is ready,” said Assistant
Coach David Flentge Thursday.
“They break into little groups and
talk it over ... they’re pretty fired
up.”
SMU, on the other hand, is a team
not to be taken lightly.
Part of the Mustangs’ strength lies
in the two All-Americans on the
team, goalie Randy Phillips and
Saeid Baghvardani. Both are being
highly recruited by professional soc
cer clubs.
While the Aggies and Mustangs
emphasize overall skill and ball
handling, SMU has the edge in ex
perience.
Prior to the game, two local youth
teams will take each other on.
The teams, both at the 12-13 age
level, will start play at 10 a.m. The
Super Sonics, a Bryan team coached
by Jim Wright, will meet the Red
Brothers, a College Station team
coached by Ataliba Lago. Youth
players from the area are invited to
attend.
Franco and the Aggies held two
soccer camps in College Station in
August.
