PHILADELPHIA — Thinking
about the previous 173 games of the
regular season, championship play
offs and World Series made Mike
Schmidt exhale loudly before the
next sip of champagne.
“I just feel so good that we don’t
have a baseball game tomorrow, ” the
Philadelphia Phillies third baseman
said wearily.
Schmidt also felt good for plenty of
other reasons in the wild celebration
scene Tuesday night. His two-run
single in the third inning provided
the spark in the Phillies’ 4-1 victory
over the Kansas City Royals for their
first-ever series championship.
In addition, Schmidt was named
Most Valuable Player of the annual
fall classic.
While admitting the award and
series title left him in a “coma,” there
was nothing comatose about
Schmidt’s performance. He batted
.381 for the six games and led his
team in RBIs (7), runs scored (6) and
homers (2).
He was a big part of all the Series’
wins for the Phillies. He scored two
runs in Game 1, keyed a four-run
eighth with an RBI double in Game 2
and hit a two-run homer and singled
to set up the winning rally in Game
5.

“It was a tough decision who to

Traditionally it’s a big Texas
schoolboy football weekend whenev
er Odessa Permian and Abilene
Cooper square off, and it’s expected
to be more of the same Friday night
in Odessa.
Once again the winner is expected
to take the District 5AAAAA crown
and advance into post-season play.
Permian, rated third in the Class 5A
top 10, has a half-game edge going
into the matchup after Cooper was
tied, 21-21, last week.
“We look forward to the game, as
we do each year,” said Permian
coach John Wilkins. “It’s usually a
big game for both of us, and it will be
again this year. That’s the way you
want it to be — you both want to be
in contention for the championship;
you want it to mean something.”
Wilkins said he was glad this year’s
game would be in Odessa, although
he admitted the home-field advan
tage wasn’t that big a factor in most
high school games. He also said both
teams would be looking toward what
the outcome of this year’s game
would mean for the 1980 season, in
stead of looking back to last year
when Cooper won and eventually
represented the district in the play
offs.
“It’s a different group of kids and
it’s another year,” Wilkins said.
“Sure, we all remember what the
score was last year and who won —
but we look to what a win this year
can mean instead of trying to make
up for what is now the past.”
Wilkins said Cooper, with an out
standing quarterback, would present
a challenge unlike any he has seen
before.
“This kid has better games than
most pro quarterbacks,” he said. “It
gives Cooper an unusual offense in
being able to run the pro dropback
pass and mix in some regular high
school running plays.
“The key for us is how well we can
contain their quarterback and his
passing.”
