Texas A&M quarterback David
Beal will have his injured right wrist
x-rayed again early this week and
that examination will determine his
status for the rest of the season,
coach Tom Wilson said Monday.
“If it doesn’t show a break, he
might be back in time for the Arkan
sas game (Nov. 15),” said Wilson. “If
there is a break, he’ll be lost for the
season.
In the meantime, sophomore

Gary Kubiak was listed as the No. 1
quarterback ahead of veteran Mike
Mosley, who had been moved to de
fense before Beal’s injury.
Wilson also said offensive guards
John Osborn and Kent Adams and
linebacker Mike Little will be held
out of work this week because of in
juries/-Wilson went on to say that if
his guards cannot play two freshmen
will have to start at those positions.
“We certainly aren’t using it as an
excuse for our record (2-4),’’ said
Wilson, “but we’ve been playing a
lot of youngsters. It tells in crucial
situations because they are inexperi
enced.”
The Aggies were clobbered by
Baylor last Saturday, a one-sided loss
that followed similiar setbacks
against Georgia and Penn State.
“We’re not as good as Georgia,
Penn State or Baylor,” Wilson said,
“but we could be 3-3 because we
should have beaten Houston. I’m
disappointed at the margin by which
we lost to those three good teams.”

DALLAS—The selection date for
college bowl games is only a month
away and the people who run the
Cotton Bowl have taken dead aim on
the Alabama Crimson Tide in hopes
of landing the No. 1 college football
attraction of the year.
Cotton Bowl officials point out that
a host of obstacles stand in the way,
but a meeting in Dallas on Jan. 1
between top-ranked Alabama and
No. 2 Texas for the national cham
pionship is not out of the question.
Such a possibility depends on two
crucial happenings:

—Texas, of course, must win an
invitation to the Cotton Bowl as
champion of the Southwest Confer
ence. The Baylor Bears are likewise
unbeaten and conceivably could
reach the Cotton Bowl without a
blemish on their record. But there is
some question that Baylor, even
with an unbeaten record, would
command one of the top few spots in
the national ranking.
—And for Alabama to become eli
gible for the Cotton Bowl, it would
have to become ineligible for the
automatic invitation to the Sugar
Bowl that goes to the Southeastern
Conference champion. Even in the
event that Alabama should stay un
beaten, the Georgia Bulldogs would
win the Sugar Bowl invite if they
have a perfect SEC record.
Alabama and Georgia do not play
each other this year and if they share
the SEC title it would be Georgia
that would earn the Sugar Bowl bid.
So there are a lot of ifs. But Cotton
Bowl officials are not taking any
chances.

tive vice president, Jim Brock, and
former chairman of the board Field
eads.
