Danville, Ill., is not the most ex
citing place to spend the summer,
but it sure made Texas A&M Univer
sity pitcher Robert Slavens appreci
ate College Station.
“That town made College Station
look like a metropolis,” the 6-8 right
hander from Houston Westbury
said. “Everything closes down at 9
p.m.”
Slavens and A&M catcher Joey
Szekely spent the summer playing
baseball for the Danville Roosters of
the Central Illinois Collegiate
League. Danville is located 130
miles south of Chicago.
The two sophomores worked on
the Roosters’ baseball field during
the day as a part-time job and had
games every night.
“Playing every night helped me in
preparing myself mentally more
than anything else, ” Slavens said. “It
was almost like playing for the minor
leagues except we didn’t get paid.

“The fans looked at us like we look
at the Astros (in Texas),’’ the pitcher
continued. “We won the league and
for the fans, it was like winning the
World Series.”
The Central Illinois League has
teams in Quincy, Peoria and Gales-
burg.
“Travelling to those towns was an
adventure in itself,” Slavens said,
chuckling. “All we saw were rows
and rows of cornfields when we
drove to the other three teams’ home
fields.”
Slavens was in Danville from mid-
June to Aug. 4.
“Aug. 4 is my birthday and coming
home was the best birthday present I
ever had,” the ace pitcher said, grin-

resigned and will leave next week for
a broadcasting job in Harlingen.
Walker, 25, has accepted a job as a
sports reporter for KGBT in the
Texas valley town. The station is a
