Mike Mosley has a bruised shoulder, David Beal has a
broken, cracked or sprained wrist. Earnest Jackson can
hardly cut on his ankle, and A&M is 2-3 on the year.
Other than that, the Aggie football team is doing fine.
In fact, the team may he doing better than everyone
thinks. Most of the less-diehard fans have kissed off the
Ags’ chance at the Cotton this year, but the players
haven’t.
After last week’s loss to the Houston Cougars and
some sleepy officials, one would think the maroon and
white troops would be about ready to give it up.
Analysis
“Our day’s gonna come,” said an optimistic Mark
Lewis after the Aggies fell just short in a dramatic com
eback to Houston, 17-13 last weekend.
For the snake-bitten Aggies, Saturday had better be
the “day,” because the dark-horse of the conference,
Baylor, will be coming into town for a little visit.
The 5-0 Bears have beaten Texas A&M the past two
years, and this year’s squad looks very impressive, to say
the least. Led on defense by All-America Mike Singlet
ary and on offense by All-SWC back Walter Abercrom
bie, the Bears are out to repeat their 1974 miracle year,
when they won the conference.
Cornerback Darrell Adams, for one, is looking for
ward to the matchup.
“We’re still going for the Cotton Bowl,” he said. “We
knew we’d probably lose one. I’m going to be glad to see
what Baylor’s got.”
Although the Ags lost Beal for at least a few weeks
after he was injured in the second quarter against the
Cougars, Mike Mosley will once again take the reins
against the Bears. He’ll be going despite a bruised
shoulder suffered on the next to last play of the Houston
game on a very questionable hit by Hosea Taylor. His
backup will be Gary Kubiak.
After Mosley had dumped off a pass under a heavy
rush, he was slammed out of bounds by Taylor. Mean
while, the referee in the area was busy fainting on the
middle of the field.
It was all part of the Aggies’ bad luck.
Saturday, however, is a new day and Baylor is a new
opponent.
Wide receiver Mike Whitwell, who hauled in a 1980
SWC season-high six receptions for 145 yards against
the Cougars, is optimistic facing the Bears.
“If we’d beaten Houston, we’d be on top right now,”
he said Wednesday. “We’ve got our backs up against the
wall right now. I think we can do it. Baylor’s going to be
really high coming in (after last week’s 32-28 win over
SMU).
“Their secondary is worse than Houston’s. This is an
important week for us. ”
Texas A&M will be bringing in an ever-improving
offense against the Bears (no matter who is at QB), and a
defensive secondary that has played up to its potential
recently.
All in all, you doubting “two-percent,” “Highway 6
runs both ways,” “bad” (etc., etc., etc.) Ags, can either
stay at home and miss a good ballgame, or join the over
71,000 of us who will jam into Kyle Field Saturday and
see one of the best matchups of the year.
