HOUSTON — The Philadelphia
Phillies can win the big game. They
proved it twice in two days.
“I can’t believe,” third baseman
Mike Schmidt said, “what we had to
overcome in this series.”
First baseman Pete Rose called
the series, won three games to two
over the Houston Astros, the tough
est he had ever experienced be
cause, after losing two excruciating
extra-inning games, the Phillies
were within six outs of a fourth Na
tional League Championship Series
embarrassment in five years on both
Saturday afternoon and Sunday
night.
“God, I’m proud of this team,”
Rose said.
Relief pitcher Tug McGraw
beamed, “I’m just so proud to be a
Philadelphia Phillie.”
The Astros, never considered to
be a championship club, went out
running and gambling in the same
gutsy style that had carried them
farther than most people thought
possible.
“I’m proud of this team, really
proud of this team, ” fifth-game hero
Terry Puhl said, “but I’m also very,
very disappointed.”
The Phillies now host the Kansas
City Royals Tuesday in the first game
of the World Series, and, for the first
time, they won’t be counted out if
they fall behind.
“We now have to be considered
when people pass out the courage,”
Schmidt said. “The Dodgers did it to
us in 1977 and they were called
courageous. Other teams did it to us,
and the same was said of them.
When they were dealing out courage
in the past, they were dealing it to
everybody but us.”
Tears stained as many faces as
champagne did in a raucous Astro
dome locker room after doubles by
Del Unser and Garry Maddox in the
10th inning Sunday provided the
winning run in an 8-7 win. The key to
the Phillies’ new-found badge of
courage, however, was some clutch
hitting in the eighth inning of each of
the final two games.
Trailing 2-0 Saturday, the Phillies
put together four straight singles by
Greg Gross, Lonnie Smith, Rose and
Schmidt in the eighth inning to tie
the game. Behind 5-2 in the eighth
inning the next night, the Phillies
strung singles by Larry Bowa, Bob
Boone and Gross and a walk by Rose
to start a five-run inning.
Astros manager Bill Virdon, who
was deserted in the late inning both
days by his bullpen, said he thought
on a number of occasions his team
would be playing the Royals
Tuesday.
“They (the Phillies) were a deserv
ing winner,” he said. “They’ve come
back when they’ve been beaten.”
The Astros tried early in Sunday’s
game to put it away with Nolan Ryan
on the mound, but Phillies second
baseman Manny Trillo, the series’
most valuable player, did in their
design. His tough play on Denny
Walling’s grounder in the first inning
stopped a run, and his relay home in
the second cut down Luis Pujols.
Such was the Astros spirit!^
jols, favoring a swollen anlfcf-,.,
in Saturday’s game, tried (tp

double despite limping Wy j
rounding second base.
The early losses hurt
when Ryan, the team’s $1
year pitcher, failed to hold)
going into the eighth.
