In “Trust,” he plays a monk, forced out of his cloister “by a land lord that won’t take vows of poverty” to rehabilitate an apostate God cor rupted by a power-hungry evangel ist named Armageddon T. Thunder- bird. Along the way, his monk — “steeped in the pure Christianity of Christ” — runs into a hooker played by Louise Lasser and a con-man tent preacher, Peter Boyle, who de livers ventriloquist sermons from a mobile church through the mouth of a Moses dummy. Feldman said the film probably will offend “those who accept Genesis as science,” but he added, “This really is a pro-Christ movie. It’s also pro-Buddha and pro a lot of other great spiritual leaders who taught us love and truth. “In one scene, I’m trying to con fess my sins to a priest, but he’s deaf, so I have to shout—and there I am, pouring my indiscretions out for everyone in the street to hear. On the primary level, it’s pure com edy, but on the secondary level, I’m trying to show that priests today are deaf to what people are talking about.” “I’d love to play the fool in ‘Lear,’” he said. “And I’d love to play Polo- nius in ‘Hamlet’ — or the second grave-digger. Those are marvelous comedic roles. But I’ve never had any formal training as an actor. I never was aware until I got into this business 13 years ago how busy my face is. I want to be less noisy. With these eyes, it’s difficult, but I’m learning to be more still. “The function of comedy is not to find answers,” he said. “It is to pose questions and let people find the answers for themselves. “My Holy Trinity is Buster Keaton, the father; Stan Laurel, the son, and Harpo Marx, the Holy Ghost.” GOING TWENTY MILES TO EAT???
