Astros triumph, 5-2;
magic number is 3
HOUSTON (UPI) — Terry Puhl
blooped a double off the glove of
second baseman Glenn Hubbard to
drive in three runs in the second
inning and Vern Ruble pitched a six-
hitter Wednesday night to lift the
first-place Houston Astros to a 5-2
victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The Astros maintained at least a
two-game lead in the National
League West, with four games to
play.
Ruble, 12-4, who pitched a three-
hitter and a four-hitter in his pre
vious two starts, gave up RBI hits by
Hubbard and Bruce Benedict to fall
behind 2-0 in the second inning.
Over the final seven innings, howev
er, he faced 22 batters, giving up two
singles and a walk.
Ruble was backed by two double
plays in the middle innings as he
struggled. In the fifth, after Benedict
singled, first baseman Art Howe
fielded Phil Niekro’s bunt and threw
to second base to start a double play
and ignite a rhubarb which brought
three Braves coaches on the field.
Umpire Ed Montague at first sig
naled Benedict safe at second, but
then reversed his call.
Ruble walked Dale Murphy on
four pitches to start the seventh in
ning, but after going 2-and-0 on
Hubbard he struck him out and got a
double play when catcher Alan
Ashby threw the stealing Murphy
out at second base.
Ashby’s double led off the Astros’
four-run second inning. Atlanta star
ter and loser Niekro, 15-17, walked
Joe Morgan and Enos Cabell after
getting two out. Then Puhl’s double
cleared the bases.
Tennis team
to go to Austin
Battalion Staff
Texas A&M’s women’s tennis team
travels to Austin Friday to compete
in the University Team Tournament
at Westwood Country Club. “It will
be a real test of this team’s ability,”
said coach Jan Cannon.
Trinity, SMU, TCU and Texas are
class opposition, she said. The Ags
will be taking a full team to Austin to
compete. “In fact, we will take the
girls who don’t compete to see what
the competition will be like,” Can
non said.
“It will be tough,” she said, “but
tough competition makes any team
better. ” The players competing will
be Liliana Fernandez, Pam Hill,
Maylen Hooten, Terri Nuetze, Amy
Closs and Sonja Hutcherson for sing
les. The doubles teams are Nuetze-
Hooten, Hill-Fernandez and Judy
Willard-Ferol Hinkle.
All the teams competing were
ranked in the top 20 in May. The new
rankings will not be out until March.
“The competition will be the best we
have faced this season,” Cannon
said. “It is the kind of test that I think
will make this team very good. ”
