By MARY ANNE SNOWDEN
Battalion Reporter
A summer trip to Germany for studies abroad can provide moret^
just academic knowledge.
Gerd Smith, a 23-year-old senior in mechanical engineering, «r
when he came back from his four-week course of studies in Rotk
burg, Germany, during the summer of 1979, he had a greaterapprec,
tion of America and American lifestyles.
People in America don’t realize it, Smith said, hut there are mt
creature comforts here that Americans take for granted.
For example, dishwashers, big iceboxes and complete ball
facilities, Smith said. The German family he stayed with whileatti
ing the Goethe Institute in Rothenhurg for his studies of Genii
language had a shower in their bathroom, he said, but they**
considered lucky by other Germans.
“People in Germany don’t have big iceboxes. Smith said, soil*!
have to go shopping more often. And if anyone thinks prices areb ^
in America, he said, they should go to Europe and compare.
The town of Rothenhurg was quaint, he said. A “medieval toa
preserved for tourists,” Smith said it had a cobblestone street, an ®
wall, and a barn downtown.
“Whew, did it smell, and right there in downtown, he said
said every morning when he went to school he would see shopkeepe
sweeping their porches to get rid of the barn’s other products.
This was because of the lack of zoning laws in Germany, hesaio
another thing Americans should appreciate.
Germans have a positive attitude toward Americans, Smiths#
Few American students had any language communication probta
Those that did, he said, practiced the false belief that if you talk la
enough, the Germans will understand you — regardless of whelk
you are speaking the German language or not.
Smith said the main staples of German food are bread, been
sausage.
Studies were not the only thing given by this Texas A&M Univeis
sponsored program. There were also two weeks of fun. Smiths)
During that time the group of 15 students toured the country side
saw castles and the Black Forest. German cities also have Me Denali
pizza, discos and parties.
