Aggies debating
Carter no-debate
I
By KATHY O’CONNELL
Battalion Hcportcr
Unlike the other candidates for the 1980 presidential election-
students at Texas A&M University disagree on President Carters
decision to stay out of the debate.
Dennis Luby, president of the TAMU Young Democrats, saidk
thinks Carter made the right decision to stay out even though it hurt
him more than it helped.
Luby said he thinks the debate was a political ploy to b
Reagan and pull votes from Carter to Anderson.
He also said Carter proved to the public that he was not go
fall into what seems to be a trap planned by the other two candidates
Since Carter has made his point, Luby said, he should no»
participate in the debates.
George Mauze, president of Aggies for Reagan said he think
Carter should have shown up at the debates to present his views
Mauze said he thinks Carter is running an “anti-Reagan” campaign
and is ruining his credibility by not having anything positive tosayfof
himself.
“I don’t think the other candidates would have put him (Carter)®
the spot as far as his decisions on foreign and domestic policy i
concerned. However, they would have argued his record, Mao®
said.
Elizabeth Graser, president of Anderson for President,
although she enjoyed the debate, she thought it would have been
better if Carter had attended because voters would have gotten i
better idea of all the major candidates’ platforms.
Graser added that Anderson may be taken more seriously nowti
he has had the chance to express his views to the nationwide
audience.
