Since “Smokey and the Bandit II,”
a pure entertaiment film, won’t win
any awards, I propose the Academy
of Motion Pictures create a new
category for its next Oscar cere
mony — best “non-artistic” film of
the year.
Some of the best films every year
go unrecognized because their pro
ducers don’t stress film as literary
visual art, but as a vehicle for enter
tainment, sort of the comic books of
movies.
“Smokey 11” fits in this category,
and just like “Animal House” and
"Caddyshack,” it will be ignored be
cause the subject isn’t concerned
with life’s great conflicts: child cus
tody, unionization of industries, et
al.
Instead "Smokey H" is a lesson in
how to ship an elephant from Flor
ida to Texas, without getting
arrested in the process. Real heavy
material.
From the absolute start of the
movie (don’t be late for this one) to
the last credit roll (and definitely
don’t leave early), “Smokey and the
Bandit H” creates fun-loving moods
and high speed motion.
Burt Reynolds once again stars
to collect a huge ransom by
threatening Miami with
destruction by two hijacked
nuclear bombs. (PG-2 hrs., 10
min.)

as the Bandit, a free-wheeling
showman and owner of the real
beauty of the movie — a 1980 turbo
Trans Am, painted the legendary
black and gold.
And the Smokey is a lawman out

to get the Bandit, who’s thwarted
him before — at least in the first
movie. Jackie Gleason plays the
sun-glassed, pot-bellied Texas
sheriff with Southern-fried perfec
tion.
The rest of Bandit’s group in
clude Sally Fields as his sensible
girlfriend, but somehow she comes
across as a self-righteous ninny.
Rounding out the originals is Jerry
Reed, who once-again plays a
good-hearted, humorous trucker
better than anyone else can.
They hit the Southern roads to
ship the elephant, named Charlotte
and the subject of the Statler
Brother’s hit song “Charlotte’s
Web,” to Dallas in time for the Re
publican Convention. And of course
the Smokey, with his idiot son-
deputy, are in Florida (don’t ask
why) to stop them.
The heroes even add another
passenger for the trip — an Italian
doctor, well-played by Dorn De-
luise, to help care for Charlotte, who
seems to be having some medical
problems.
The rather wordy soundtrack
never stops, but it’s not really a hin
drance. The music, which flows with
the action, is led by Reed, who is
still a refreshing country singer.
But this movie, which has some
good acting, great chase action and
an off-beat finale, won’t win any
thing, while the technically brilliant
“The Shining” and the realistic por
trayals of “Urban Cowboy” prob
ably will receive artistic recognition.
Not that Reynolds is really
bothered by all of it. He, like other
actors and producers of “low art”
films, can cry all the way to bank, if
not the winner’s circle.
