Student government seeks freshman aide applicants By MARY ANN HINNANT Battalion Reporter Every fall, freshmen encounter upperclass sarcasm as they read campus maps and ask directions to Rudder, Tower. However, there is one thing a freshman can do that no upperclassman can: apply for a position in the student government as a freshman aide. According to Melissa Gosper, former freshman aide and co-coordinator for this year’s freshman programs, other than being a freshman, the only requirement is to have an interest in learning about Texas A&M Univer sity. A freshman aide has a job similar to that of a page in the state capitol, Gosper said. There is quite a bit of errand running and doing small jobs around the student government office. “Freshman aides play a very important part in student government,” Gosper said. “They are the gap fillers and are responsible for many jobs that must be done. ” Freshman aides have specific duties. They are re quired to attend two senate meetings each semester, spend at least three hours per week in the student government office and serve as a member on any one of the five committees of student government, Gosper said. According to Mike Dillow, the second coordinator of Man replaces old flag flown for hostages United Press International EL PASO — Frank Acosta lo wered his faded symbol of hope for the American hostages in Iran, but a new replacement waved over the neighborhood moments later. Devoutly religious Acosta, 56, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the tattered, faded Amer ican flag he took down had flown above his home since 53 Americans were taken hostage in Iran last November. It will be given to one of the hostages’ families. The banner had remained aloft un til Friday, despite wind, rain, snow or the setting sun, he explained, be cause “the hostages are held day and night.” He is determined to fly a flag until the captured Americans are re turned safely. “It’s faded and shredded,” Acosta said, “a reflection of the hostages’ faded dreams.” There is only one way to ensure a solution to the crisis, said Acosta, and that’s “through the miracle of prayer. God Almighty is the sup reme commander of all armies. ” the freshman programs, freshman aides have an advan tage over most other new students. “They are immediately introduced to the whole sys tem of the University and they’re able to learn what makes the clock tick,” Dillow said. The freshman aides also have the chance to meet and work with Texas A&M’s top administrators, he said. “For me, this was the best thing about being a fresh man aide,” Dillow said. If a student wants to get involved in student govern ment, Gosper said, being a freshman aide is the one big step that will help get him there. She added that about half of last year’s freshman aides are currently serving as senators or committee mem bers, or they have been appointed to other positions in the student government. Applications are available at the student government office in Room 216 of the Memorial Student Center for those students interested in applying to be freshman aides. At this time students must sign up for an inter view to be held next week. The deadline for application is Friday. Cosper estimated that two hundred students will app ly to be freshman aides, 40 of whom will be chosen. “What we re looking for is someone who is willing to devote time and effort to student government,” Dillow said.
