students when they return to Texas
A&M University, and the flood of
pamphlets, calendars and other liter

B)ne of the rookie publications this
year is a “Calendar of Events for

V the Memorial Student Center

Mara Morse, last year’s chairman of

The format of the calendar is a 9
inch by 6 inch paperback spiral with
158 pages. The calendar section in
cludes two pages for each week, with
Monday through Thursday on one
page and Friday through Sunday on
the facing page. University events
are listed on their appropriate days,
with additional space available for re
cording assignments and other acti
vities.
Also included in the calendars are
selected campus and area telephone
numbers, a campus map, a local
church directory, and information on
the MSG, University Center and
major student organizations and uni
versity services.
An added feature of the non-profit
booklets are discount coupons,
which are good toward MSC prog
rams and services.
Macha said the committee wanted
to provide a service that would be
useful and appealing to most stu
dents — present and former.
Part of the appeal should come
from caricatures drawn by veterinary
school student Wade Bradshaw,
Macha said. The artwork appears
throughout the calendar along with
more than 20 photographs.
Another consideration was to keep
the cost down, Macha said. To help
offset this cost, the businesses listed
in the telephone directory section
each paid a fee. But the committee
had hoped to use a vinyl cover for the
booklets and couldn’t, as this would
have pushed the price above $3, she
said. The committee will try to
obtain student service funds to help
finance the calendars in the future,
Macha said.

The first-time effort has its weak
nesses, Macha said. For example,
the map does not include the newer
buildings on campus, such as the
modular dormitories. Also the num
ber of activity listings for the spring
and summer is much lower than the
fall listings.
Student feedback is being soli
cited on the calendars, Macha said.
The back page of the booklet is a
postage paid, reply form which
calendar purchasers may return with
comments. In addition, individuals
who return the forms will receive
updates of the University calendar.
The two thousand calendars are on
sale in the MSC Bookstore, the main
hallway and the Student Programs
Office in Room 216.
