Battalion Staff
ghted the Deit I Th e Brazos Valley Crisis Prevention Hotline, servicing the Bryan-
ake Reagan into f°^ e 8 e Station area, is still helping people overcome problems,
un , lt ( u ; r although it has changed its sponsor and telephone number.
i. r I As of Monday, Crisis Hotline’s new sponsor is Greenleaf Psychiatric
o mg or morel r en t e rlnc., located in Bryan. It was formerly sponsored by the Brazos
weeks. plley Mental Health Mental Retardation Center.
I Crisis Hotline is manned by volunteers who “are concerned with
helping people,” coordinator Mary Orndorff said.
I “Last year funds were cut by the Texas Department of Community
Diction, ” said Dr. Russell Dunckley, director of the MHMR-sponsored
|Crisis Hotline. Consequently, the service s sponsorship had to be
ransferred to Greenleaf Psychiatric Center and the Brazos Valley
Community Action Agency, he added.
; The Drug Abuse Prevention Division of the National Institute for
|)rug Abuse had given MHMR a grant which made the opening of a
liotline possible in 1978, Dunckley said.
I Services offered by Crisis Hotline include information referral and a
friendly ear for problems of any kind.
I Caller’s concerns range from problems with being away from home
for j suicide attempts, Orndorff said, ‘‘and we try to
efer people to the proper services or talk to them. ’
“We don’t advertise having a ‘big ear’, but that’s what we do most of
jhe time,” a volunteer said. Callers are limited to 15 minutes, before
they are asked to terminate the call, he said.
All possible options are explained to callers, but no single one is
advocated, he said.
’ The most crucial hours are between 6p.m. and 2 a. m., but there are
( hot enough volunteers available for those hours. The phone is manned
every day between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., Orndorff said. Service during
jjther hours is discontinuous and volunteers try to answer the phone
as much as they can.
| ! Volunteers are needed all the time and can contact Crisis Hotline at
its phone number 775—3708. The Crisis Hotline’s mailing address is
413 Varisco Building, Bryan, Texas 77801.
