Rangers beat Yanks;
hot Indians win again
United Press International
Everyone knew George Brett
could hit — but now he’s using his
fists instead of a bat.
Brett, who helped trigger a free-
for-all and was subsequently ejected,
extended his hitting streak to 18
games with a three-run homer in the
fourth inning Tuesday night to pow
er the Kansas City Royals to a 6-3
victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Dennis Leonard raised his record
to 12-8 and picked up his fifth win in
his last six starts. The right-hander
shut out the Tigers until Champ
Summers hit his ninth homer with
Steve Kemp aboard in the eighth.
Milt Wilcox retired the first nine
batters he faced but gave up an in
field single to Hal McRae after Willie
Wilson walked to open the fourth.
Brett followed with his 13th homer of
the season.
Wilcox, 11-7, didn’t give up
another hit until Frank White beat
out an infield single with one out in
the eighth. Three runs scored when
Wilson tripled, McRae doubled and
Dave Chalk doubled.
Two of Wilcox’s pitches forced
Brett to hit the dirt the next time he
batted following his homer. The
second one angered him and after he
flied to center, Brett rounded first
and pointed an accusing finger at
Wilcox. The pitcher threw down his
glove and a benchclearing brawl
halted play for several minutes. No
one was injured but Brett was re
moved from the game.
In other AL games, it was Boston
3, Milwaukee 1; Baltimore 8, Chica
go 2; Texas 8, New York 1; and
Cleveland 8, Toronto 5.
Rookie Dave Stapleton sparked a
two-run eighth inning with a run
scoring single, lifting Boston over
Milwaukee.
Terry Crowley’s grand slam cap
ped a five-run fifth inning that en
abled Steve Stone to win his 17th
game. Crowly’s blast, his fifth of the
year and third career grand slam,
followed a bases-Ioaded single that
scored Al Bumbry to tie the score.
Crowley then followed with his hom
er offlosing rookie Lamar Hoyt, 4-1.
Cleveland won its 11th victory in
the last 13 games. The Indians sent
nine batters to the plate in a three-
run second inning, highlighted by
Dilone’s first of three hits. After a
rain delay of 62 minutes, nine more
Indians went to bat in the fourth and
Brohamer’s single triggered a four-
run inning.
