WKB Page 4 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1980 G Debate delayed Bani-Sadr claims U. S. prolonged hostage crisis by jailing Iranians United Press International Iran’s President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr charged the United States with deliberately prolonging the nine- month hostage crisis by jailing 192 Iranians and called on the prisoners to resist deportation to the point “that they have to drag you into the planes.” The speaker of Iran’s parliament announced Monday that because of alleged mistreatment to the Iranians the assembly was postponing its debate on the fate of the 52 hostages. He said the Americans, held for 271 days, should be put on trial to show the United'States “we are not scared.” Iran, charging the Iranians arrested during a violent July 27 demonstration in Washington were “subjected to the most brutal assaults,” officially appealed to the United Nations to appoint a delegation to visit the prisoners. The 192 Iranians are now held in federal prisons in New York. Many of them are on a hunger strike and refuse to identify themselves. U.S. and prison officials denied the Iranians were mistreated and State Department spokesman John Tratt- ner said Washington welcomed a U.N. inquiry into the prisoners’ treatment. In London, between 30 and 40 Iranians were arrested Monday outside the U.S. Embassy during a demonstra tion to protest the jailing of the Iranians in the United States. Tehran Radio said Bani-Sadr sent the message to the Iranian Islamic Society in the United States and Canada telling the prisoners Iran supported them. “I have said many times that America itself is prevent ing the problem of the hostages from being solved, ” Bani- Sadr said. “Each time it (the United States) creates a new problem to keep the original problem of the hostages insoluble.” “Militant Moslem students stand firm and tolerate hardship,” the radio quoted Bani-Sadr’s letter as telling the prisoners. “Try not to surrender. If they (U.S. officials) are going to deport you, resist as far as possible so that they have to drag you into the planes.” The speaker of Iran’s parliament, Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, said the assembly had asked the Supreme Islamic Council to make preparations for trials for the American hostages, since the Iranians were arrested in the demonstration sparked by the death of the deposed shah. .. . Susan Wray, coordinator of An derson’s Colorado campaign, said the Illinois congressman had just given a “rousing talk” to volunteers and was leaving his campaign head quarters when a man stepped from a crowd and threw an egg. “The congressman was just reach ing street level when this guy let go with a couple of eggs, ” Wray said. “I was right behind him and got some egg myself. ” Wray said Denver police and agents of the Secret Service and the FBI immediately jumped on the assailant. “The person who threw the eggs was immediately decked, he was on the ground in a split-second,” she said. “The Secret Service put the congressman in his car and rushed him away, and others went to get Mrs. Anderson, who was still inside talking with volunteers.” Wray said the second assailant was “shouting the same slogans” as a man who attacked Anderson earlier in the day during an appearance at the governor’s meeting. In that incident, a man screaming “You represent World War III and fascism” interrupted Anderson’s speech by throwing eggs at Ander son and at North Carolina Gov. James Hunt. Both eggs missed but spattered Anderson, Hunt, Ander son’s wife, Keke and Vermont Gov. Richard Snelling. The egg-thrower, identified as Jose Calderon, 34, of nearby Greeley, was grabbed by security agents and taken away. Jack Egnor, special agent in charge of the Denver FBI office, said Calderon had been charged under the U.S. Justice Code with assault on a member of Congress. The suspect was taken before U.S. Magistrate Royce Sickler, who set bond at $2,000 and remanded him to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. Man drops pants, gets place to stay United Press International AUSTIN — A man needing a place to sleep for the night dropped his pants in the police station lobby in an effort to get arrested, but his action earned him more jail time than he wanted — 10 to 20 days. Thomas Thompson, 22, of Hous ton was stranded Monday night and needed a place to stay, so he asked Sgt. Glenn Koons in the Criminal Investigation Division if there was any place he could stay in Austin. Koons suggested the Salvation Ar my, but Thompson said he didn’t have the necessary identification to get a bed there. “Can I stay in the jail?” Thomp son asked. Koons replied that Thompson had broken no laws. “If I take off my pants would I be arrested?” the man asked. Koons assured him he would. Then Thompson unzipped his pants, dropped them and exposed himself to a woman and a man in the lobby. He was jailed for disorderly con duct and got the bed in jail he wanted Monday night. But a city judge Tuesday fined him $103.50 for disorderly conduct, and jail officials said Thompson would either have to come up with the money or work off the fine by spending 10 to 20 days in jail.
