ARLINGTON — Every game the
Texas Rangers manage to win these
days seems to be a struggle. It was a
struggle Tuesday night, but at least it
was a win.
There were also some cheerful
signs as far as the Rangers were con
cerned in their 5-4, ninth-inning
triumph over the Seattle Mariners.
First of all Al Oliver came through

winning run. But even more impor
tant was the performance by Sparky
Lyle, who pitched the final two in
nings to record his third victory of
the year.
“That’s the best I’ve pitched in a
year and a half, Lyle said. “I don’t
know if Pat (manager Pat Corrales)
ever lost confidence in me. But I
never did.”
The Rangers bull pen has been
nothing short of disastrous this sea
son and Seattle did manage to tie the
score after Lyle entered the game in
the eighth inning Tuesday night. But
that run could be charged off to a
misplay by the Rangers’ infield, not
to Lyle’s pitching.
With the game still deadlocked
and appeared heading for extra in
nings, Rivers doubled off loser Shane
Rawley, 3-2, with two out in the
ninth. That brought up Bump Wills
with first base open and the danger
ous Oliver on deck.
Rawley got behind on Wills, 3-0,
and manager Darrell Johnson
ordered the fourth hall to be thrown
intentionally.
“You don’t want to have to throw
to Oliver,” said Johnson. “But when
Wills had a 3-0 count you don’t want
to be throwing him an easy pitch to
hit. So I decided we i
start fresh with Oliver.
But Oliver, leading the li
game-winning RBI’s, hit (hi
pitch off Rawley down the HI
line.
‘‘It’s percentages to

probably would rather have
to Bump than me. Also, I Ail
