Edward Kennedy and focus on aid Reagan. tarter came out of the Rose Gar- Monday for his first political earance of 1980 — a jubilant ting with the campaign workers who won primary after primary and almost enough delegates for the nomination without a candidate. While saying he expected Ken nedy to remain in the Democratic race, Carter offered “a greeting hand, a healing hand to those who have not supported us before.” Flanked by Robert Strauss, his campaign chairman, Carter told the campaign workers the thrust of their work should now be aimed at the November election. He said he was willing to do battle at the Democratic National Conven tion with Kennedy, since that was a “forum for discussion,” but other than that he said it is time to get on with beating Republicans. “Were coming now to the end of a long campaign and I want to make sure the ending will give us a strong series of victories and leave us with a strong Democratic Party,” he told about 100 youthful campaign work ers at Carter-Mondale headquarters. “It’s time for us to look forward, not backward,” he said. “It’s a time for us to heal existing wounds that occurred in the very tough Demo cratic Party election campaign, and not create new wounds.” Carter attended a dinner laun ching his campaign last November and has not campaigned outside the White House since. He had planned a full-scale campaign during the pri maries, including a debate with Ken nedy before the Iowa caucuses in January, but he canceled all appear ances when it became apparent the hostage crisis in Iran would not be quickly resolved. Now, he promised the workers: “You will now have an active partner from now on in this campaign.” ? THE BATTALION Page 7 WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 1980 > XJ.N. envoy must not discuss hostages United Press International TEHRAN, Iran — Iran sent a message Tuesday to U.N Secretary- General Kurt Waldheim saying a U.N. envoy slated to visit Tehran soon, would not be allowed to discuss the 200-day American hostage crisis, the official Pars news agency reported. Fearing growing anti-government feelings in the military, Iran also warned the members of its armed forces they would be tried by tough revolutionary courts for acts against the Islamic regime. The Foreign Ministry, which Monday denied reports of a three- phased plan aimed at freeing the 53 American hostages, Tuesday called the reports “lies” spread by “some news agencies which are subser vient to American imperialism.” Foreign Minister Sadegh Ghotbzadeh sent a message to Waldheim saying when the two men met in Belgrade during the funeral of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, “it was agreed that one or two members of the commission of inquiry should come to Iran to complete the earlier investigation.” He was referring to the U.N. special commission that went to Iran for 17 days in March to investigate the alleged crimes of the deposed shah in a failed attempt to free the hostages, who today entered their 200th day of captivity. “As already stated, there will be no talks with this commission about the problems between Iran and America,” Ghotbzadeh, currently attending the Islamic conference in Islamabad, Pakistan, said in his letter. Habib Daoudy, a Syrian jurist who was an original member of the five-man U.N. commission, is scheduled to arrive in Tehran within a week to hold talks with Iranian government officials. A Foreign Ministry spokesman reiterated Iran’s position that the fate of the hostages will be determined by the newly elected Islamic parliament, scheduled to convene May 28. Earlier in Islamabad, Ghotbzadeh said 1,200 American companies have taken steps to circumvent the U.S. trade embargo against Iran. Tuesday’s warning to military personnel followed the execution of an army pilot in Isfahan in southern Iran on charges of disturbances and disciplinary violations. The military warning broadcast by Tehran Radio said “mercenary elements of the enemy” had been inciting members of the armed forces and trying to weaken their morale. S>, > Afghan aircraft attack village in Iran, kill one United Press International TEHRAN, Iran — Two Afghan helicopters attacked an Iranian hamlet Tuesday, killing an Iranian villager in a barrage of rockets and shells, Iran’s Pars news agency reported. Pars said the incident occurred in the unnamed rural area 25 miles south of the town of Tayebad, which lies 12 miles west of the Iran- Afghan border in Horassan province. The incident came as Iran showed its support of the Moslem guerril las battling the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul by including rebels in its official delegation at the Islamic conference in Islamabad. There was no immediate official comment on the attack from the Iranian government. Pars said the helicopters fired more than 300 rockets and shells into rural homes and set ablaze three motorcycles. It said the Iranian killed in the attack was not immediately identi fied. The agency had no immediate report on the extent of damage to rural homes caused by the rocket attack. According to an unofficial estimate, more than 200,000 Afghans have taken shelter in Iran and several guerrilla movements receive support from Shiite clergy in Qom. AGGIES!
