Page 14 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1980 Aggie women triumph again in TAIAW Aggie women’s softball team members Carrie Austgen (16) and Rhonda Reese warm up before Wednesday’s game against Northeast Louisiana in the TAIAW Regional Softball Tourna ment at Ree Creek Park. Texas A&M University beat the Indians, 13-2, in a game which featured a fifth inning Aggie triple-play. The Aggies have now reached the semi-finals, and will play Oklahoma State University today at noon. Staff Photo by Lee Roy Leschper Jr. by RICHARD OLIVER Sports Editor Despite only getting one hit, the Texas A&M University women’s softball team knocked off Oklahoma University Thursday night, 1-0. The Aggies now have reached the semi-finals of the TAIAW Regional Softball Championships being held through today at Bee Creek Park in College Station. Other results Thursday: Stephen F. Austin beat Sam Houston State, 8-1. Sam Houston had beaten the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Texas Women’s University, 5-4, Wednesday night. TWU slipped by McNeese State, 7-4, and the University of Texas- Arlington crushed West Texas State, 12-2. TWU was scheduled to take on UT-A in a late game Thursday. Several games scheduled for Thursday afternoon were delayed several hours due to rain, and thus the games have been moved up all the way through to the finals, which will be held tonight. Texas A&M’s defeat of Oklahoma pits them against Oklahoma State University today. Aggie coach Bill Galloway has labeled OSU as the “team to watch” in the tournament, saying, “They will definitely be the sleeper, they have a good team.” The Aggies’ win in the double elimination tournament Thursday was hard-pressed. The one hit, a third-inning single by Carrie Austgren, didn’t even re sult in the lone Aggie run. The run came on an error and a wild pitch. In the second inning, Rhonda Reese reached on an error, and Sarah Sheldon ran for her. Sarah was sacrificed to second, then to third, and finally scored on a wild pitch. Only three Aggies reached base during the game — Rhonda Reese in the second (error), Carrie Austgen in the fifth (single); and Lori Stoll in the sixth (error). Aggie winning pitcher Lori Stoll, a freshman from Lee’s Summit, Mo., allowed five hits and struck out five in the game, and walked one. She was never in serious trouble, and has now lowered her Earned Run Aver age to 0.35, and has a record of 19-2. Texas A&M’s spring record is now 38-7, and their overall record (spring and fall) is 65-14. The Aggies are ranked second in the country. Oklahoma State is rank ed tenth. In Division 2 action Thursday, only one game could be played. Northeast Louisiana blanked North west Louisiana, 8-0. Today’s games: Stephen F. Austin plays Sam Houston at 10 a.m.; OU plays the loser of Thursday’s TWU-UT-A late game at 10 a.m.; Texas A&M plavs OSU at noon; Baylor Wesleyan at 8:30 a.m. in Dili] action, along with Central! Oklahoma against Louisiana. Texas A&M ace Shan McDi 17-5, will pitch for the Aggies; Ags lose game, but TAMU wins’ The Texas A&M University baseball team lost to the San Antonio Dod gers in a close exhibition game April 9. The loss didn’t affect the Aggies, because it didn’t count in the stand ings. The University, however, is richer because of the game. Three San Antonio Aggie groups — the San Antonio A&M Club, The Aggie Wives’ Club and the A&M Mother’s Club — were given 100 percent of all the gate receipts from the game by the owner of the Dod gers. Wally Moon, president of the Dodgers (the farm club of the major league Los Angeles Dodgers), and Bob Farmer, vice-president of Sig- mor Corporation presented Bob Dobbins, president of the Texas A&M San Antonio chapter, a check for $1,500 for the San Antonio A&M Scholarship Fund. All three men are former Texas A&M students. Also, the officials offered an extra $1,500 for the organizations if over 3,000 attended the game. Over 4,000 attended. The game, played at Keefe Sta dium at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, was considered a practice game, and non-existent as far as re cords were concerned. At this point in the season, strangely enough, the San Antonio Dodgers are leading their division in the Texas League by two games over Amarillo. The Aggies have finished a suc cessful season, qualifying for the SWC tournament to be held in mid- May. It’s success all the way around.
