New degree
plan offered
at A&M
i
Texas A&M University now offers
a degree program developed to pro
vide public agencies with employees
trained in public administration.
Graduates of the new public admi
nistration program will be qualified
to hold positions as municipal admi
nistrators, members of research
teams for city staffs or city councils,
personnel management assistants
and many more, said Dr. Sam Kil
patrick, head of the Texas A&M De
partment of Political Science.
Most of the positions will be be
ginning to mid-level management
jobs for local, state and federal gov
ernments, he said. The program was
approved by the Coordinating Board
of the Texas College and University
System in March.
A survey, conducted by the Na
tional Association of Schools of Pub
lic Affairs and Administration,
pointed out the pressing need ex
pressed by public employers “for
graduates who have the necessary
knowledge and skills for planning,
implementing, and evaluating pub
lic programs,” said Dr. Gary Halter,
adviser for the program.
“This degree will allow the stu
dent to be more career oriented. It
will be a degree on which a student
can go out and get a job,” Halter said.
“We are not abandoning our bache
lor of arts programs. These are still
important, but the bachelor of arts
programs are aimed at students who
will seek advanced degrees either in
political science, government or
law. ”
The new degree program also
emphasizes practical experience
through internships and cooperative
education so students can work with
local public administrators, Halter
said.

Hitchcock dies
United Press International
HOLLYWOOD — Sir Alfred Hitchcock, 80, the pear-shaped,
jowled master of macabre suspense whose 54 movies successfully
blended murder, laughter and gore, died peacefully Tuesday at his
Bel-Air home.
Members of Hitchcock’s family — his wife of 53 years, Alma Reville,
his daughter Patricia O’Connell and his three grandchildren — had
been at his bedside since last Friday and were with him when he died
at 9:17 a.m.
The family said Hitchcock died of natural causes — a combination of
arthritis, heart disease and kidney trouble that has plagued him for
years. The rotund director’s heartbeat was maintained by a pacemaker
for the past four years.
A funeral was scheduled for Friday at 10 a. m. at Church of the Good
Shepherd in Beverly Hills.
The portly Englishman — who kept his British accent intact,
although he left England 41 years ago — perfected the art of scaring
audiences and always included his ritual walk-on cameo appearances.
For more than half a century, Hitchcock chilled and bemused
audiences with films including such classics as “Rebecca, which cap
tured an Academy Award for best picture in 1940 in his first Hollywood
venture.
Last January, the film director was honored by the country of his
birth and officially became “Sir Alfred,” being named Knight Com
mander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II,
Actor Jimmy Stewart, who appeared in some of Hitchcock s finest
films, was close to tears when told of his old friend’s death.
“I’ve lost a wonderful friend,” Stewart said. “The world has lost a
tremendous talent that has made a tremendous contribution to the art
of film, to millions and millions of people.”
Hitchcock, whose career started in the early 1920s in London,
directed a stream of hits such as “Suspicion,” “Spellbound,’ "Life
boat,” “Notorious,” “The Paradine Case,” “Strangers On a Train,
“Dial M For Murder, “To Catch a Thief,” “Vertigo,” “North by
Northwest,” “The Birds,” “Marnie,” “Torn Curtain,” “Topaz,’’“Fren
zy” and “Family Plot.”
But he may be best remembered for the shower scene in “Psycho,’ a
film containing what he called “the most shocking effect in any of my
pictures.”
Hitchcock’s cherubic face and droll delivery became familiar to
television viewers during the 10-year run of “Alfred Hitchcock Pre
sents.” He introduced each show of the series.
Hitchcock also had a preference in his leading ladies — a cool
looking blonde in the Ingrid Bergman-Grace Kelly-Joan Fontaine
tradition.
“I have never cared for women with sex hanging all over them like
baubles,” he said.
