Institution of Dean’s Honor Roll
status for students with a grade point
ratio of 3.75 or above was approved
Wednesday by the Texas A&M Uni
versity Academic Council.
The new honor is placed above
existing Distinguished Student sta
tus of a grade point ratio of 3.25 or
better for no fewer than 15 semester
credit hours.
Brad Smith, new student body
president, said the new honor will
give extra motivation to the 7 per
cent of students with 3.75 GPRs.
Smith said 19-20 percent of Texas
A&M’s students consistently get the
3.25 GPR Distinguished Student
award.
The Council meeting was the last
this semester.
Also approved was a request from
the School of Military Sciences to
allow deans to negotiate on an indi
vidual basis whether or not to accept
advanced ROTC courses as elec
tives.

Simpson, representing the military
science school, said. “Get the hand
cuffs off.”
The council approved 2,645 gra
duate and undergraduate degree
candidates for the three graduation
ceremonies Thursday and Friday.
Prescott said there will be 861 gra
duates at the ceremony at 2 p.m. on
Friday, 884 at Friday’s 7:30 p.m.
ceremony, and 900 at Saturday
morning’s ceremony at 9. The total is
slightly more than last year’s number
of degrees awarded.
Several changes were approved in
the University Rules and Regula
tions.
After some discussion, the council
approved a new rule regarding the
use and storage of handguns on
campus.
The present rule states firearms
may not be kept or cleaned on cam
pus. The new rule adds disassem
bled firearms or those stored in vehi
cles to the list of prohibitions.
However, exemptions were added
for law enforcement and military
personnel, organized classes using
handguns, ceremonial weapons of
the Ross Volunteers and Fish Drill
Team and the Metzger gun collec
tion.
Also approved were curriculum
changes to the agricultural education
department to receive a broader
base of study and biology students to
receive greater opportunities for
specialization.
After much discussion, the council
tabled one of its most controversial
issues — the removal of the require
ment of a dean’s approval for Q-
drops.
Gold down
so is dollar
on Tuesday

LONDON — The cut in U.S.
prime interest rates depressed the
dollar on European money markets
Tuesday and . the price of gold also
took a tumble.
Gold opened at $507.50 in Britain
and Switzerland, an overnight fall of
$17 in Zurich and $18 in London.
A dealer with bullion brokers
Moccata and Goldsmid said most
London bullion brokers believed the
gold price went too high last Friday
after the failure of the U.S. hostage
rescue mission.
The dollar opened lower against
all European currencies, following
the overnight announcement of a 1
percent cut in prime lending rate by
Morgan Guaranty Trust and the Na
tional Bank of Detroit.
In Frankfurt, the dollar opened at
1.7905 marks down from 1.7975 and
in Zurich it was 1.6585 Swiss francs
against 1.6693 overnight.
In Paris, $1 bought 4.1860 francs
against 4.1887 Monday and in Brus
sels the dollar was worth 29.1150
down from 29.3400.
In London, the pound opened at
$2.2900 compared to Monday’s clos
ing rate of $2.2835.
