The Texas A&M University men’s
track team competes in the Baylor
Invitational today and Saturday in
Waco.
Assistant coach Ted Nelson said
'Thursday the only athlete who
won’t be able to compete in the
meet will be javelin thrower Mike
Newsom, who has a sore arm.
Texas A&M faces some of the top
track schools in the region — the
University of Texas, Baylor, Lamar
and the University of Texas-
Arlington.
“Of course, University of Texas is
real strong in the field events,” Nel
son said. Texas has been the Aggies’
strongest opponent this spring and
• has the top marks in the Southwest
I Conference this season in four field
' events — the high jump and the tri
ple jump, the discus and the javelin.
However Texas A&M has pole
vaulter Randy Hall, who has cleared
18 feet twice this year; Curtis Dick
ey, the year’s fastest man in the 100-
meter dash; and one of the fastest
400-meter relay teams in the nation
— Steve Willis, Leslie Kerr, Vernon
Pittman and Dickey.
Three of Texas A&M’s athletes —
long jumpers Johnny Hector and
James Redus, and high jumper Don
Jones — will play in the Maroon and
White spring football game Saturday
night in Kyle Field.

The Texas A&M baseball team
travels to Austin this weekend for
what may be the series that deter
mines the Southwest Conference
championship. The Ags are a game
behind the Longhorns in the league
standings and must win all three
games to take over first place.
Although both teams are assured
of a slot in the post-season S WC tour
nament, the series will probably be a
typical Aggie-Longhorn battle, ancj
it is especially important to Texas
A&M coach Tom Chandler, who in
22 years at the Aggie helm has
finished second to the Longhorns
eight times.
The Longhorns, 40-6 on the sea
son, are currendy ranked No. 3 in
the nation and the lead the confer
ence with a 15-3 record. The Aggies,
31-7, are ranked ninth and are
second in the league with a 13-4 re
cord.
The Aggies are coming off a four-
game sweep over Oklahoma City
University earlier this week. The
Aggie bats went wild in that series,
with the Ags scoring 28 runs in the
double-headers held Monday and
Tuesday nights. The Aggie pitching
wasn’t bad either. Six Texas A&M
pitchers allowed only seven runs in
those four games.
The young Aggies will probably go
with three freshman on the mound.
David Flores will start the nine-
inning Friday night opener and Rick
Luecken and Robert Slavens will
man the pitching duties in the Satur
day double-header.

TENNIS
The Texas A&M tennis team gets a
chance to avenge an earlier loss
when it plays host to Pan American
University today at the varsity
courts.
The Ags suffered one of their eight
season losses when Pan American
beat them 5-4 in the Pan American
tennis tournament in February.
The Aggies are coming off a major
upset against the University of Hous
ton last Saturday. The Cougars,
ranked No. 13 in the country, were
knocked off by the Ags, who are No.
20, 5-2, in a match shortened due to
darkness.
On Saturday, the Aggies will host
Lamar University.
