Page 16 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1980 Families say letters not enough United Press International Some families of the 50 Americans held hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Iran say they are grateful for mes sages delivered by the Red Cross, but “no amount of mail or messages” can erase the anger that their loved ones are captives. Representatives of the Interna tional Red Cross visited the hostages Monday and began contacting the hostages’ families Tuesday. The State Department said evidence col lected by the Red Cross convinced them all 50 hostages in Tehran are alive. Tuesday with a “personal message” from her husband. Although he sounded “fine” and still sounded like “the man I love, no amount of mail or messages can take away the fact that he and the others are still prisoners,” she said. Timms said they have not heard from Hermening since a letter in January, in which, they said, he sounded trou bled and brainwashed. They’re not so bad off after all.’ Nothing changes the fact they’re still impris oned,” said Pat Lee of Falls Church, Va., wife of hostage Gary Lee, 36. Kevin Hermening, Bar bara and Kenneth Timm, said they were “frustrated by the ineffective ness” of Washington’s efforts to free the hostages. The Timms arrived in Paris Tues day in an effort to win visas to Iran so they can visit Hermening. The Harry Metrinko of Olyphant, Pa., father of Michael Metrinko, said Red Cross officials phoned him Tuesday ' and said his son was “in good shape” and “good spirits.” “We feel very happy,” Metrinko said. “We hadn’t heard at all from him.
