In addition to the nursing home problem the region’s food stamp program for the aged will be shut down, Markley said. After discussing this issue with BVDC staffers Markley said local government does not have the re sources to provide a food program for the aged. Markley suggested that the BVDC present its case to the Legisl ature. Individuals in the Council should present their congressmen with this issue, he said. The BVDC is comprised of Burle son, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, Washington and Brazos counties. In other business the Council tabled action on two low- to medium- income housing projects off East 29th Street and Pinfeather Road in Bryan. The apartment project on East 29th Street would provide 148 units at a cost of $4,442,700. It was tabled because a city study showed it would create too much traffic congestion on East 29th Street. The other complex on Pinfeather earns oney and in award By TERRY DURAN Campus Reporter A Texas A&M University student as been named the March coopera- ve education student of the month y NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson pace Center. Cathy A. McMahon, a senior eco- omics major, was given the award, /hich includes a bonus of $255, for er work this fall on a cost analysis of he manufacture and testing of heat- irotective materials on the space buttle. McMahon says about 30,000 tiles oade of fiberglass- and styrofoam- ike materials are on the outside of he shuttle to protect it from heat luring its re-entry into the earth’s tmosphere. McMahon was assigned to a group hat kept an eye on cost and readi- less of the tiles. On the space center’s recommen- lation for the award, McMahon is iited for her effectiveness in revising lost and time estimates for the shut- lle’s ‘‘thermal protection system,’’ )ut she said she felt robbed of the eeling of accomplishing something. I “I couldn’t seem to find out what I vanted to know,” she said. She said here were problems caused by her leing a 21-year-old female co-op stu- lent dealing with corporation execu- ives. The senior from Houston said she thinks she got the award because she did an adequate job of something very difficult. ” She said her presen tation was given to NASA’s Washing ton, D.C., shuttle programs office. McMahon says she will work for the LBJ Space Center again this summer, then graduate from A&M [U December. save energy a very bright idea would house 130 units. It would cost $3,289,700. Dr. J.C. Miller, chairman of the Brazos County Program Buil ders Committee, originated the idea for the campaign, and he said he is happy with the campaign’s success so far. On Wednesday many College Station residents had their trash which included pots, pans, brushes and old appliances wait ing for the clean-up volunteers. Miller said. There is a possibility of a second trash pickup for Col lege Station residents Saturday, and Bryan residents will be asked to have trash, aside from regular garbage on the street curbs early that morning. In addition to the trash pickup days, Miller said, all Brazos County citizens are being urged to make special efforts to free the premises of weeds, excess grass and any unslightly items which mar the appearance of their prop erty. Miller said area youngsters have shown interest in the cam paign. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and various schools in the area have participated so far. “This is just the first step, ” Mil ler said. “We have an organiza tion for long-term plans.” Among these plans is a county wide beautification seminar to be held on the Texas A&M Universi ty campus next fall. Although this clean-up cam paign has the support of both city councils, the Brazos County Commissioners Court, the dis trict highway department, the county extension office, Texas A&M University, the Bryan- College Station Chamber of Commerce and various civic groups, Miller said the cam paign’s success depends upon volunteers. The Brazos County Commis sioners Court has furnished the trucks to pick up the trash, Miller said. The campaign’s success also depends, he said, upon whether the people learn the importance of keeping a clean environment. The campaign would be unsuc cessful if people clean up the first week and fall back into their habits of littering the next, he added. V —— Attention Senior Women!
