The Wildlife Society is bringing Earth Day ’80 to Texas A&M Univer sity by conducting an aluminum re cycling drive and organizing activi ties on campus to coincide with others around the country. Peyton Hughes, a senior wildlife and fisheries science major, is Earth Day ’80 coordinator for Texas A&M. Earth Day ’70, the first Earth Day, began a decade of increased environ mental awareness in the United States. While it emphasized the effects of pollution on the environ ment, this year it will focus on the progress of communities. Wildlife Society members will sell a limited number of Earth Day '80 T-shirts and biodegradable bumper stickers that have a life expectancy of one month. When the day arrives, Hughes hopes to have exhibits set up in the MSC Main Hall or by Rudder Foun tain. Highlighting the good and bad points of the Texas coast, the Wild life Society will have a Year of the Coast display. For example, Hughes said sewage is being dumped into Laguna Madre near Brownsville, and the ecological balance of the area is upset. A petition table will be set up to collect signatures protesting this and similar environmental issues, in addition to instructions on how to write congressmen.
