Handball Nationals
In the recent National Intercol
legiate Handball Tournament held
in Irvine, California, February 29
- March 2, Texas A&M sent four
players. Sue Oakleaf won the Na
tional Women’s Open Singles
Championship, while Glorian
Motal took 3rd place and Jill
MacAluso won the Consolation
bracket. Sue has been the Texas
State Women’s Singles Champion
the past two years while Glorian
and Jill were both semi-finalists
this year.
Our fourth player, John Welch,
made it to the Quarter-Finals in
the National Tournament in a very
tough “C” division. John is the
Southwest Intercollegiate “C” di
vision singles champion for 1980.
The results of the national tour
nament and other recent Texas
Tournaments reflect the en
thusiasm and talent in handball
that is present at Texas A&M. We
plan to have over forty players
participating in the upcoming
Southwest Divisional Handball
Tournament in Austin, March 21-
23.
We are also looking forward to
the 3rd Annual Spring TAMU
Handball Club Tournament that
will take place at Deliu:

CAUGHT IN THE ACTION this week is Mr. Walter M.
Penberthy, who will throw out the first pitch at the Penber
thy Celebration of Sports. The Penberthy Intramural Com
plex is named for “Mr. Penny’, who came to A&M in 1926 to
teach physical eduction and serve as Intramural Director.
At A&M, “Mr. Penny” reorganized the intramural prog
ram so every student had a chance to participate. He also
held various positions within the University, including Head
of Health and Physical Education Department, Chairman of
the MSC Council, and Chairman of the Athletic Council. In
1947, Mr. Penberthy became Dean of Men. He returned to
full-time teaching in 1959 and taught volleyball for required
P.E. classes.
As a professor, “Mr. Penny” learned the names of all his
students and checked them in by a “hello” each day instead of
calling roll. During his tenure, he also wrote a column for
The Battalion entitled “Penny’s Serenade”, which gave
advice and philosophies of the good life. Mr. Penberthy
retired in 1966.
Today “Mr. Penny” visits the campus often during his daily
three-mile walks. He also enjoys hunting and fishing and
owns a ranch in Clifton. He and his wife have traveled a bit
and consider the Orient their favorite place. They also visit
their three children and eight grandchildren at least once a
year and visit friends all over the United States.
Mr. Penberthy enjoys being a spectator at Intramural
games and finds “the wholesome fun” the greatest thing
about the intramural program. In his opinion, the best job on
campus is the directorship of Intramurals because of its
student contact. According to his wife, “Mr. Penny is
interested in young people and will never grow old.”
