“The big difference in the game?
We had David Britton and Arkansas
didn t. “
— Shelby Metcalf
One year ago you wouldn’t have
heard Texas A&M head basketball
coach Shelby Metcalf heap that kind
of praise on David Britton. But then,
Britton didn’t lead the Aggies to the
Southwest Conference basketball
championship last year.
Britton, who was named the SWC
tournament’s Most Valuable Player,
went on a 10-point scoring streak
that started at 11:31 in the second
half and lasted until 6:36. All 10
points came off the Aggies’ four-
corner offense which is centered
around Britton who is one of the best
one-on-one players in the confer
ence.
Britton finished the game with 23
points and three assists as the Aggies
defeated the Hogs 52-50.
“David takes advantage of the
situation,” Metcalf said. “His one-
on-one ability makes him hard to
cover in that situation and the good
thing is, he doesn’t just score, he gets
a lot of assists off the four-comers.
“We never ran a four-corner
offense until David came to A&M.
Heck, when he was in junior college,
they sometimes would start the
game in the four-corners but we ha
ven’t gone that far. We usually go
into it when we start losing
momentum.”
While Britton’s spinning drives
and free-throw shooting kept the
Hogs at bay on the offensive end, the
monstrous Aggie defense led by
Rynn Wright held Arkansas’ usually
high-percentage shooting team
under 50 percent for the game. The
Razorbacks shot a poor 42.9 percent
from the field for the game yet that
was better than the Ags’ 41.0 per-
Ag women place fifth
cent.
The Aggies won the game at the
free-throw line sinking 20 of 28 while
the Hogs hit eight of nine.
The Aggies’ switched from zone
defense to zone defense and kept
Arkansas confused as the Razorbacks
forced shot after shot.
“We just outplayed ’em,” Britton
said. “We out-talented them also.
Once we get ahead and go into the
four-comers, we know we can win.
This is the way it’s supposed to be
because all the teams finished the
same they were seeded in the tour
nament.
“We came in No. 1 and finished
No. 1.”
A great part of the Aggies’ tourna
ment success was due to Wright who
played consistently well in both the
Texas Tech and Arkansas victories.
The Aggies, 24-7 for the year, now
head to Denton where they will play
Missouri Valley Conference winner,
Bradley University. The winner of
that game will play Louisville.

The Texas A&M University
women s tennis team placed fifth out
of 11 schools in the Florida State
University Invitational in Tallahas
see last weekend.
The invitational, won by Florida
State, was a “flight tournament,” in
which there is a separate tournament
division for each team ladder posi
tion.
For example, all of the number
one players were in one division, all
the number two players were in
another division, up to six divisions
for singles and three for doubles.
There was also a consolation tour
nament in each division for players
defeated in the first round.
Terri Neutze was the only tourna
ment winner for Texas A&M.
Neutze took first place in the num
ber four singles consolation tourna
ment, winning her final match by
default against Linda Pavlouich from
Florida Southern. Pavlouich had to
leave before playing her final match.
Texas A&M’s top doubles team,
Maylyn Hooten and Neutze, and the
number three doubles team, Kath
leen Sissom and Lilliana Fernandez,
both made it to semifinals in their
divisions.
Hooten-Neutze were defeated by
the number one seed from Florida
State 6-4, 6-3. Sissom-Fernandez
lost to a doubles team from North
east Louisiana University 6-3, 6-4.
The team’s next match will be a
dual match against Southwest Texas
State University. The two teams will
play Thursday at 1:30 p.m. on the
Texas A&M varsity courts.
