The Shuttles Flew
The Texas A&M Badminton Club competed in the Baylor Badminton
Tournament in January injanuary. The following were winners in the college
division: Consolation-Women’s Singles: Pat Fierro; Consolation-Women’s
Doubles: Pat Fierro; Consolation-Mixed Doubles: Pat Fierro and Eric
Hunter.
In the Men’s Singles B Division, first place was taken by Eric Hunter and
second place by Bill Connatser. Hunter and Connatser then teamed together
to win consolation Men’s B Doubles. Tony Grice won first place in the Men’s
Doubles A Division and second place in the Mixed Doubles A Division. Also
competing from A&M were Soeii Bong and Ricardo Hoegg.
The Badminton Club then traveled to Corpus Christi for the Del Mar
College Tournament. Raheela Rasheed won Consolation Ladies Singles in
the college division while Bill Connatser and Rita Parish (CCSU) won first in
the mixed doubles. Others competing from A&M were James Welford, Alan
Johnson, Doug Repping, Helena Bowes, and Eric Hunter.
In another tournament in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the Men’s A Doubles was
taken by Tony Grice and the Men’s B Consolation was earned by Eric
Hunter.
Upcoming events include the Texas Southmost College Tournament
(March 15), and the Southern Regionals in Houston (March 26). The Texas
A&M Badminton Club will be holding a tournament in G. Rollie White on
April 5. There will be three divisions, “A ”, “B ”, and "novice”, and the
tournament will be open to all students, staff and faculty.

Gymnastics Team
On Saturday, February 23, the Texas A&M Mens Gymnastic team com
peted in the SWTSU Invitational Tournament and came away with the top
team score, defeating SWTSU, UTA, Pan American University and t.u. (This
was t.u.’s first conference loss this year.)
Individual honors were as follows:
Marty Garza: 6th P.B.; 6th P.H.
Ray Moltz: 4th H.B.; 2nd K.; 2nd V; 2nd P.B.; 1st All Around!
Jim Foght: 5th R; 5th P.H.
Mark Hartwell: 1st Floor; 1st R; 1st V.
James Higgins: 2nd V; 5th Floor
Rick Zapata: 3rd p.h.
Francisco Sun: 6th P.B.; 5th P.H.
Neal Irvin: 6th V.
Pat Callihan: 5th P.B.; 2nd Floor; 2nd P.H.; 1st H.B.

The above performances, combined with those of Lee Burchan and Eddie
Morgan, enabled the Aggies to take the overall team title upsetting t.u. for
the 1st time in many years. Congratulations to “Gymnasts of the Meet Mark
Hartwell and Ray Moltz for their outstanding achievements.
The Gymnastics team will be at home for the next several weeks training
for a tentative meet here on March 29 and Conference Championships to be
held in Dallas on April 25-26. Keep up the good work, gymnasts!

Penberthy
Celebration
of Sports
It’s here, folks, the celebration to formally introduce the
lights on the Penberthy Intramural Complex and honor the
father of Intramurals at A&M, Walter M. “Penny” Penberthy.
The weekend of March 21, 22, and 23 will be devoted to
softball, spectators, and extramural sports demonstrations.
The highlight of the weekend is a continuous 48-hour softball
tournament. 96 teams will participate for prizes in men’s,
women’s and corec divisions. Entry fee is $35 per team. Entries
are limited to TAMU students, faculty, staff, and spouses.
Fun and sports is the name of the game. Entries open today,
March 3 for the softball tournament and are scheduled to close
Tuesday, March 18.
