Price of gold drops slightly
dollar up in most markets
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1980
United Press International
LONDON — The price of gold
dropped slightly in light trading
Tuesday, but the U.S. dollar moved
ahead on most markets with con
tinued optimism about the political
situation in Iran.
In London Tuesday, gold started
at $706.50 an ounce, down $6 from
Monday s close. In Zurich, gold was
down $1, opening at $709.50 an
ounce.
“The better dollar brought gold
down this morning, but trading re
mained quiet,” said a dealer for
Samuel Montagu bullion brokers of
London.
Brussels was the only major mar
ket where the dollar declined, open
ing the day at 28.8550 Belgian francs,
down from Monday’s close of
28.8650.
“Hopes that the hostages in Iran
may soon be released gave a fillip to
the dollar in early trading,” said a
spokesman for Barclay’s Bank Inter
national.
‘Antabuse’ used for alcoholics
United Press International
WASHINGTON — A widely
used drug that has proven effec
tive in keeping alcoholics from
drinking can cause some serious
side effects, says The Medical
Letter, a nonprofit publication.
The drug, disulfiram, known
commercially as Antabuse, reacts
with alcohol to make a drinker ill.
The severity of the reaction varies
with the individual, the dose of
disulfiram taken and the amount
of alcohol consumed.
The newsletter said a study last
year found that mildly unpleasant
reactions can occur with as little
as a half a jigger of 100 proof alco
hol, or one tablespoon of some
cough remedies, mouthwashes
and other preparations contain
ing alcohol.
Reactions with alcohol can
occur up to 14 days after a single
dose.
The publication said the pa
tient usually feels hot and the face
becomes flushed within five or 10
minutes. More severe reactions
include headaches, nausea, brea
thing difficulty, chest pain, low
blood pressure, confusion and
dizziness.
It said the most severe reac
tions can cause heart failure, con
vulsions and even death.
“Although the effectiveness of
disulfiram for treatment of alco
holism has never been estab
lished by well-controlled clinical
trials, Medical Letter consultants
experienced in the treatment of
alcoholism are convinced that it is
useful in the treatment of
selected patients,” the newslet
ter said.

Soviet envoy
Malik dies
United Press International
MOSCOW —Yakov A. Malik, the
Soviet Union’s longtime ambassador
to the United Nations and one of its
best-known diplomats, has died at
the age of 73, the Tass news agency
reported Tuesday.
Malik held the rank of deputy fore
ign minister following his return to
Moscow in 1976. But he had been
seldom seen in the past three years,
and it was believed he was in declin
ing health.
Tass said Malik died Monday. It
gave no other details.
The former U.N. envoy was se
riously injured in an automobile acci
dent in New York several months
before his return to Moscow.
Malik had been the Soviet repre
sentative on the Security Council
from 1948-53 during the United Na
tions’ early years.
He left New York then for a seven-
year assignment in London as
ambassador to Britain. Andrei
Gromyko, the present Soviet foreign
minister, was his predecessor at the
Court of St. James.
During the 1950s and 1960s Malik
was regarded as one of the Soviet
Union’s leading experts on dealing
with the West. He was widely cre
dited with having begun secret nego
tiations with the United States in
1949 that resulted in the end of the
Berlin blockade.
Prison repair
should wait
United Press International
SANTA FE, N.M. — The New
Mexico Legislature may be reacting
without thinking by deciding so soon
to reconstruct the state penitentiary
devastated in the worst prison riot
since Attica, a community leader
said Tuesday.
“Personally I am concerned that
perhaps we are reacting in shock,
almost,” City Councilwoman Dora
Battle said.
A New Mexico Senate committee
Tuesday cut $44.6 million to build a
new 500-inmate maximum security
prison from a measure drafted in re
sponse to the bloody 36-hour takeov
er of the state penitentiary.
The Senate Judiciary Committee s
action knocked out the money Gov.
Bruce King is seeking to build a new
facility. The rest of the $82.5 million
sought by King would be used to pay
for housing 482 inmates transferred
to institutions in other states, restor
ing the riot-wracked prison, and im
proving salary and training for
guards.
“It seems to me the state has a
chance — for the wrong reasons, of
course — to install perhaps one of
the most progressive penal systems
in the nation,” Battle said. “I would
like to see us take whatever steps
necessary to achieve that end, and I
don’t think we can do it in seven
days.”
She said she had no objections to
some provisions of the bill which had
been well thought out previously,
but she was ‘‘very concerned if they
make a major decision with respect
to reconstruction of the penitentiary
a few days after it burned down.”
King told a news conference Mon
day the prison appropriation bill was
among the top issues he wanted the
1980 Legislature to resolve before
adjourning at noon Thursday. If the
lawmakers failed to act. King said, he
would call a special session to deal
with the matter in about six weeks.
Among those calling for careful de
liberations in resolving penal prob
lems were community leaders
opposed to any new prison near their
city, religious groups concerned that
inmate rehabilitation programs will
be overlooked and a corrections
organization seeking better condi
tions for prison employees.
Several committee members said
they wanted more information be
fore agreeing to spend massive
amounts of money on a new institu
tion.
Warden Jerry Griffin said the riot-
torn prison housed 538 inmates to
day, compared with the 1,132 in the
structure when the riot erupted. He
said 482 inmates were transferred
out of state to federal and state penal
institutions, with the remainder still
housed in hospitals and county jails.
