Mars doesn’t Coll

United Press International
BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you think
astrological misfortune is why you
didn’t qualify for the Winter Olym
pics, a team of scholars and scientists
has bad news for you. The fault, they
say, lies not in your stars, but in
yourself.
Their conclusion follows an unsuc
cessful attempt to verify the claim of
two French psychologists that the
position of Mars at a person’s birth
influences his or her ability in sports.
The psychologists, Michel and
Francoise Gauquelin, contend that
world-class athletes are born statis
tically more often under the astrolo
gical sign of Mars.
They based their study on 2,088
European sports champions — cyc
lists, aviators, soccer and rugby play
ers — which they contended showed
nearly 22 percent of them were bom
under Mars.
The Gauquelins attribute the fi
gure, which statisticians agree is a
noteworthy difference from the 16.7
percent probability, to the “Mars
effect.’’
The study came to the attention of
the Committee for the Scientific In
vestigation of Claims of the Paranor
mal. The group, headed by Dr. Paul
Kurtz of the State University of New
York at Buffalo, is an organization of
80 scholars and scientists "commit
