Page 12 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12. 1980 Gymnasts win meet The Texas A&M women’s gymnas tics team set a school record for points scored and won the fourth annual Texas A&M meet. In the meet, held here Saturday, the Aggies scored 133.55 points to top the field of four. TCU finished second with 121.80. Southern Arkansas was next with 118 and Southwest Texas State had 111.6. Two other school records were broken, both by a freshman. Linda Phillips of Garland, set Texas A&M records in the balance beam and for overall points. She won the balance beam with an 8.60 and took the over all individual championship with a score of 34.00. Tracy Shearin finished second for the Aggies in the overall competition with a score of 33.40 . Kay Mann and Cindy Mahle of Texas A&M finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Mahle was second to Phillips in the balance beam while Mann was fourth and Shearin was fifth. The Ags took the first three places in the floor exercise, with Shearin taking first, Phillips second and Mahle taking third. They did even better in the vault, taking the first four places. This time Phillips won with Shearin second, Mahle third and Mann fourth. Coach Jan Fambro will take those four, Phillips, Shearin, Mann and Mahle to represent A&M in meets at Pueblo, Colo. Friday and Denver Saturday. The Aggies finished the season un defeated in four home meets and are set to go to the Collegiate State Championship at TCU on Feb.29 and March 1. — Mike Burrichter Aggies defeat SW Texas in tennis The Texas A&M men’s tennis team won their second straight match by defeating Southwest Texas State 9-0, in a match played here Monday. The match was originally to be played last Saturday, but rain forced a postponement. The wait didn’t hin der the Aggies, who beat Hardin- Simmons last week by the same score. The Ags droppd only two sets and outscored SWT in games, UT SS. Reid Freeman beat Buck Bern stein in the top seed match, 6-1,6-2. Number two seeded Trey Schutz topped Lee Davis by the same score. Alberto Jimenez, the number three seed, dropped Bart Bernstein by a 6-0, 7-5 score. Number four seeded Max King beat Brian Lusson, 7-5, 6-4. Brian Joelson, a freshman, thrashed Oscar Nieto, 6-2, 6-0, and Jim Grubert made it a clean sweep in singles by beating Doe Darling 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. The team will next travel to Edin burg for the Pan American tennis tourney on Friday and Saturday. The Texas A&M track team heads The Aggies had two firsts and two for the Southwest Conference indoor seconds in the LSU meet that was track championship in Fort Worth held last Saturday. Leslie Kerr won the 440-meter dash with a time of 48.22 and the mile relay team of Ver non Pittman, James Washington, Steve Willis and Kerr won with a time of 3:15.72. Tim Scott had the best shot put toss of his career, a 63-foot 10 1/2 inch throw that earned him a second place finish in that event. Bart Daniel had the other runner-up fin ish, placing second in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:12.50.
