Aggies looking for No. 11
By TONY GALLUCCI
Sports Editor
The Aggie basketball team is on
another winning streak, this time
only one game long, and the Ags are
hoping to extend it when they host
Rice here Saturday at 8 p.m. in G.
Rollie White Coliseum.
Shelby Metcalfs charges took a
67-56 win over SMU Wednesday to
take a brief one-half game lead in the
Southwest Conference. The lead was
wiped out by Arkansas Thursday
when they ousted Baylor 70-51 in
Waco after breaking out of a 26-26
halftime tie.
Rice provided mid-week spice in
the SWC by taking an incredible 10-
point win over Texas Tech in Hous
ton Thursday. Ricky Pierce led the
Owls to the convincing upset with 27
points and 14 rebounds, as the Owls
were in control virtually the entire
way.
The Owls led 32-26 at the half, and
then put on a spurt at the start of the
second half to go to 38-26 when Texas
Tech could not score a point for the
first five minutes of the second
period.
The Owls, surprisingly, domin
ated the boards with a 40-29 margin
in rebounds that Red Raider coach
Gerald Myers cited as a big factor.
Rice Coach Mike Schuler said,
“This was a great win for our young
men. It may be called a major upset,
but our men felt they could win
tonight because they had played
Texas Tech so well out there (Lub
bock).”
The Owls lost in overtime in Lub
bock in January.
Late in the first half, Tech coach
Myers was assessed two technical
fouls by the officials. But Owl free
throw expert Bobby Tudor missed all
four of the free throws allotted him.
“I was embarrassed to tell you the
truth, but I just couldn’t go to pieces
over it,” said Tudor after the game.
“I just had to go on and play my
game, and everything came out
okay.”
Tech’s leading scorer was Ralph
Brewster, with 19 points and 10 re
bounds.
Rice is now 3-8 in the Southwest
Conference and 5-14 on the season,
and a win over the Aggies in College
Station Saturday would give them a
good shot at sixth place and the all-
important home court advantage in
the first round of the Southwest Con
ference tournament.
Tech, 7-5 in conference play and
13-9 for the season, is battling for
third place in the conference.
Scott Hastings keyed an Arkansas
streak early in the second half Thurs
day night that carried the Razorbacks
to their victory over the Bears and
into the lead once again.
Arkansas, winning its 11th game in
its last 12 starts, climbed to a 10-1
record in the SWC while Baylor, bat
tling for a home-court advantage in
the opening round of the SWC post
season tournament, fell back into a
tie for sixth place with SMU at 4-8.
The Aggies are expected to start
the usual lineup Saturday — David
Britton and Dave Goff at guards and
Rudy Woods, Vernon Smith and
Rynn Wright along the front line.
Ten Ags played in the win over SMU
and they have good shot at gaining
more playing time this weekend.
Texas A&M beat Rice, 84-65, in their
meeting earlier this year.
Arkansas and Texas A&M each
have one game remaining before
Showdown II in Fayetteville. The
Tuesday night contest will probably
decide the Southwest Conference
title.
