Study shows aspirin
no heart attack cure
United Press International
WASHINGTON — A major
three-year, government-sponsored
study has failed to confirm earlier
indications a few aspirin a day might
reduce the risk of a repeat heart
attack.
The disappointing findings
prompted the National Heart, Lung

and Blood Institute to advise doctors
not to give aspirin on a regular basis
to cardiac patients in an effort to pre
vent recurrent heart attacks.
The $17 million study was con
ducted at 30 medical centers after
several earlier studies suggested the
anti-blood clotting effects of aspirin
reduced the risk of a repeat stroke.
At least one study indicated aspirin
reduced the risk of second heart
attacks.
Dr. Robert I. Levy, director of the
institute, said the difference in death
rates in the new heart attack study
was not significant between 2,257
patients who took three aspirin a day
and 2,267 who took placebo pills.
“In fact, there were slightly more
deaths due to recurring heart attacks
in the group which took the aspirin,”
Levy said.
The report, released Monday, will
be published in next week’s issue of
the Journal of the American Medical
Association.
The study found the rate of non-
fatal heart attacks was slightly lower
in the patients taking aspirin. But
Levy said the incidence of digestive
system problems, such as ulcer
symptoms, was considerably higher
in those taking aspirin.
Stroke and the onset of stroke
symptoms did occur less often in the
group of heart attack patients taking
aspirin than the group given the
placebo, the report said. But the re
sults were not considered statistical
ly significant according to the guide
lines established for the study.
