Heston Cherry said the Research foundation, in cooperation with the k Office of University Research and lie Office of Human Resources Re search and Development, has made javailable to the Texas A&M faculty (lie Illinois Researcher Information (System (IRIS). ' “To me, this is one of the greatest [services I have seen anyone provide in the form of readily availabel re search information,” Cherry said. Cherry said the IRIS system, which is located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, offers It a quick, individually tailored search containing suggested funding sources and enough information for the individual to decide on the speci fic program he wants to pursue. The IRIS system is free to the fa culty and the information is either accessible through a telephone hook up or through the mail, Cherry said. The user of the system selects any number of subject keywords from over 800 subjects available in the keyword index. He then answers several questions that help limit the search to his particular needs. Once this is done the system matches these restrictions and keywords to produce a listing of applicable prog rams, he explained. The listing contains the name of the agency, address, applicant criteria, deadlines for application and a short description of the program. Cherry said the system empha sizes post-doctoral and professional funding, and that only continuing programs are listed in the data bank. An advantage to the system is that the information is updated daily to ensure that the information is cur rent. Faculty members at Texas A&M can use the system at four locations. Telephone hook-ups are located at the Research Foundation, the Office of University Research, the Medical Sciences Library and at the Auto mated Information Retrieval Service in the library. “This is an experimental program for the first year to see how it works and how valuable it is to the Univer sity staff.
