opinion split on Playboy search
By AMY DAVIS
Battalion Reporter
1 Ten years ago, if a magazine were
hi feature an article about Southwest
monference women, the writer
Irould likely have stayed in College
Station just long enough for a fill-up
jnd a Big Mae.
Times have changed, however,
jnd this week, a representative from
layboy magazine is in College Sta-
on selecting Aggies for a photo
ssay about Southwest Conference
'omen.
In a series of Battalion interviews,
exas A&M women said they did not
*1 offended by the magazine pub-
shing an article with extensive exp-

osure of their peers.
Most of the men interviewed
admitted to reading the magazine at
times, but they felt appalled at the
thought of the girl sitting next to
them in history being featured in a
Playboy article.
The men agreed a woman’s place
is in the classroom or the home -—
anywhere but a “girlie” magazine.
“I don’t li^e Playboy coming here
because A&M is a conservative cam
pus and it is demoralizing to the cam
pus and the traditions here,” said
Mike Beitler, a sophomore civil en
gineering major.
Ralph Hartman, a junior en
gineering technology major, said he
does not think women ought to pose
nude for magazines; but added that
each girl is entitled to her own
opinion.
“I can’t say that I would be proud
to have someone flip through Play
boy and say, Hey, those are Texas
A&M women ” he said.
Dr. Stephen Miller, assistant pro
fessor in Spanish, said he is unhappy
about the magazine including Texas
A&M women in its article.
“It seems to me that the appear
ance of an A&M coed in Playboy,
given the nature of the magazine,
would convert that woman from a
friend and student to just a sex ob
ject,” he said.
While the men interviewed said
they thought the Playboy article is a
bad idea, the women said it did not
bother them.
Victorina Martinez, senior theater
arts major, said she likes the idea
because it means women are being
noticed.
“Playboy magazine has some very
talented photographers and they are
a responsible magazine. I feel they
will handle the article properly,” she
said.
Jill Swinbank, junior management
major, said she would not pose for
the magazine because her morals go
against it.
But, she said, it doesn’t bother her
that Playboy is interviewing Aggies.
“After all it isn’t exploiting women
if they volunteer. No one is holding a
gun to their head and forcing them in
front of a camera, ” she said.
