Staff photo by Lynn Blanco Texas A&M University has not discriminated against women in rela tion to admittance to the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band because “no bona fide applications have been made” by a woman desiring to be in the band, said University President Jar vis Miller. Miller spoke on topics ranging from women in the band to parking and shuttle bus problems at a meet ing of the Off-Campus Aggies Mon day night. In a question-and answer-session, Miller was asked about the pending court case against the University in which a female cadet claims she was denied entry into the Aggie Band. Miller explained that no female cadet has ever checked the box on advance registration and housing in formation indicating she desired admission to the band. In the most recent development, the University received a letter from the U.S. Justice Department on Dec. 12 asking detailed questions about women in the Corps of Cadets, Miller said. “It was very clear from the ques tions that [the attorneys] didn’t understand the situation,” Miller said. The Justice Department has joined Melanie Zentgraf in the case against the University. When a student questioned Miller about solutions to the campus park ing problem, the president named four parking lots with planned ex pansion. Lot 50 near Zachry will be expanded and a new parking lot will be built near Kyle Field during the spring and summer. The lot across from Rudder Tower and Lot 7 near Halbouty will be elevated, doubling their capacity within a year to 18 months.
