THE BATTALION Page 3 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1980 et Weather Index aid highway safety By JON HEIDTKE Campus reporter jA Wet Weather Safety Index iVSI) has been developed by a hgjfcis A&M University engineer to ■ised in improving highway safety the ■ weather. r. Don Ivey s WWSI uses pre- |ive equations to relate tire- ment friction, traffic, highway rainfall characteristics in provid- increased highway safety. WWSI, which has garnered onal attention, has been two neri( "j -sin the making, but the material ® research have been under de- pment since 1968. biggest tendency for wet ther accidents occurs in urban ydxl File areas because most of the traffic con flicts occur here, said Ivey, who is also the assistant director of the Texas Transportation Institute (TIT). Ivey said the state is now in the process of putting the WWSI into programs of maintenance and re habilitation of the highways. “The objective of these prog rams,” said Bob Lytton a researcher with TIT and a civil engineer at the University, “is to keep the highways in good condition and to provide a smooth ride.” The WWSI can also be used to determine which road elements need priority repairs, so limited maintenance funds can be spent to maximize wet weather accident re duction, said Ivey. A family of computer programs known as the Rehabilitation and Maintenance System (RAMS) has been employed by the TTI to com bine all these elements to see if the maintenance cost of highway repair can be reduced. With the help of RAMS, Lytton said that the 10 percent increase in the use of state funds could cut $25 million off the annual budget of $250 million. So in one year the TTI, whose main office is located on campus in the Highway Reserach Center, can justify its existence, if the programs are used and used properly, said Lytton. Slippery roads may become safer to drive on Index developed by Dr. Don Ivey, a Texas with the institution of a Wet Weather Safety A&M University engineer. raft Workshop registration begins today By TIM JASEK Campus Reporter k‘ Memorial Student Center ft Shop will begin registration for pring workshops today. be workshops, which begin Feb. d run until April 7, offer classes verything from glass etching to d carving and will be taught by libers of the craft shop, Texas A&M University staff and the Bryan- College Station community. Our engineers convert complicated tasks into simple ones. With just the push of a button, Xerox equipment works wonders. Dependably. Our engineers’ reward? Success. And Xerox technology is built on success stories. Xerox is dedicated to new ideas. And to our engineers who are developing them. While our competition cut their R&D budgets, we increased ours. (By 15%). Engineers at Xerox work with almost $1 million a day converting the tech nology of the future into reality. Our challenge of the 80’s. Not everyone is ready for it. Xerox is. And we’re looking for engineers who want to be part of it. Your future can get off to a great start in our reprographics technology. But did you know that Xerox is also a leader in processor memory discs and drives, electronic typing and printing and telecommunications ? Xerox is a total information center. Give your ideas the attention they deserve. Check with your college placement office for campus inter view dates and schedules. Then talk to our campus representatives. Today is the last day for on- campus students to register for Project I.D., a crime prevention program sponsored by Alphi Phi Omega (APO). APO, a national service frater nity, is working with local police departments to engrave students’ Texas driver’s license numbers on personal property to aid in re covery and return, if stolen. Barry Deutsch, pledge master for APO, said they had only enough engravers and people to cover on-campus this year, but hoped to extend the service to off-campus students next semester. Interested students can sign up for the service through today at the Memorial Student Center, Sbisa Dining Hall, and the Com mons, or they may call APO at 845-1515.
