ill 5' THE BATTALION TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1980 Page 5 Energy management courses to be taught College Station, Consolidated tohold joint elections By JED T. YOUNG Campus Reporter Business managers concerned with rising energy costs will get the chance to learn how to save energy in a series of seminars to be held this spring in College Station. Industrial energy auditing short courses, designed to teach com panies how to reduce energy useage, will be held April 28 through May 2 at the Aggieland Inn in College Sta tion. These courses are sponsored by the Engineering Extension Service of Texas A&M University, Texas Society of Energy Auditors (TSEA) and Entek Associates of College Sta tion. The courses run for 2V2 days, with classes varying from one to seven hours. Some of the courses include computer simulation and control, heat recovery systems, thermal in sulation, energy management and building energy use. Entek Associates, a group of reg istered engineers, is concerned with energy auditing and teaching businesses to audit themselves. “The courses are designed for peo ple who, for instance, may have been appointed in charge of energy con trol for their particular firm or busi ness, and do not know where to be gin as far as energy auditing and con trol,” said Harold B. Owens, direc tor of operations for Entek. Owens said businesses can save energy costs by effective manage ment and operation. “A 10 percent savings is almost certain by altering specific operation and management procedures, he said. Entek associates are working on many energy-saving projects throughout Bryan-College Station and Texas, including projects to monitor systems of schools and local businesses. Entek has also designed a solar house which is being built in College Station. “We plan to monitor (the) energy usage to determine cost- effectiveness,” Owens said. The classes will be offered five times in 1980 at several locations in cluding Dallas, Houston, San Anto nio, and possibly Oklahoma City, Owens said. Everyone is encouraged to attend but Owens said, that a technical background is helpful. By VENITA McCELLON City Reporter The A&M Consolidated School Board approved a proposal Monday night to join with the city of College Station for the April 1980 elections. This proposal would allow the school board to use the same facili ties, election judges, clerks and vot ing machines as the city. The joint election should reduce the cost of the elections for both the board and the city. Board President John C. Reagor said. Reagor said the board would con sult the city on the appointment of election judges and clerks. “There’s got to be some work done, but if this can take place, we’ll save some money,” said Reagor. The board also approved a revised bus route that will eliminate the 3:30 p.m. kindergarten routes. This ac tion will be in conjunction with an administrative policy to change the kindergarten dismissal time to 3 p.m., to coincide with the other dis trict schools. Under previous policy, the kindergarten classes were held until 3:30 p.m. The change, recommended by Assistant Superintendent H. R. Burnett, will take effect Feb. 4. Bur nett said the schedule change would eliminate the additional cost of an added bus route and enable parents to pick up their children at one time. The change would also allow kinder garten teachers to participate in 3 p.m. faculty meetings. “We’re shortening the sessions very little,” Burnett said, explaining that the kindergarten classes will lose only five minutes per day. “As for the instructional program, there’s no change,” he said. In other action, the board appointed John Bradley, Victor E. Schember and James Luscombe Jr. to the Board of Equalization for the 1980-81 tax roll.
