^ Hallucinogenic plant use as psychiatric tool
being discussed in lecture series this week
By MELISSA MARTIN
Campus Reporter
Psychiatry may one day use plants
that induce hallucinations as a tool to
help people. Dr. Richard Evans
Schultes said Monday in the first of a
series of lectures.
Schultes, a taxonomist and econo
mic botanist said, “My interest in
hallucinogenic plants is from the
medical point of view. Psychiatry, as
a branch of medicine, has not prog
ressed as rapidly as other fields in
medical science and doesn’t have as
many tools. These plants when prop
erly understood may be a tool in the
hands of a psychiatrist.’’
The hallucinations are caused by a
limited number of chemical com
pounds acting on a specific part of the
central nervous system, Schultes
said. When the compounds are ex
creted, the hallucinations and abnor
mal conditions appear, Schultes
said.
“Today any poison can so upset the
body metabolism that these abnor
mal conditions,” Schultes said.
“They will last as long as the abnor
mal metabolistic condition exists.
“Some of our hippies have ex
perimented with various types of
plants which are poisonous and have
experienced these hallucinations,”
Schultes said. Catnip is one of these,
he added.
Schultes said he lived in the Ama
zon for 14 years looking for new hal
lucinogenic plants. “There are 148
known species used as hallucinoge-
nics,” he said.
Schultes will continue his series of
lectures through Friday in room 105
of Harrington Classroom Building at
4 p.m.
