i Page 10 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1980 Woods, Wright, Smith anchor conference leaders 44 The Wall” averaging 44 points for Ag s By TONY GALLUCCI Sports Editor They’ve been called nearly every name in the book. . . abusive, acos mic, acrobatic, aerodynamic, affir mative, admirable, audacious, awe some . . . but the only name that has stuck is “The Wall.” “They compose the Aggie basket ball team’s front line and bave been, from the beginning, the indeed awe some 1-2-3 punch of 6-11 Rudy Woods, 6-9 Vernon Smith and 6-6 Rynn Wright. Their immediate value? How about as the top three Aggie scorers and top three re bounders. Smith, at 16.4 points per game (ppg), is not only the Aggies leading scorer, he holds the second spot on the current Southwest Conference scoring charts. His current scoring pace and his 1168 points at present indicate he will become A&M’s all-time leading scorer in about 26 games. He should take over number one in the re bounding slot in about 20 games. He is tied for leading rebound honors on the team right now with Woods, averaging 8.3 per game. Right on Smith’s heels is the oft underrated Wright. Wright is aver aging 15.3 ppg, good for second hon ors on the team in that category. His 7.5 rebounds per game rank him third in that category behind Smith and Woods and leaves him about 30 games to catch No. 1 John Beasley. Wright, in taking over Beasley in either scoring or rebound ing, must also overtake teammate Smith. Woods, impressive in his last four starts, is averaging 12.4 ppg this sea son. At 8.3 caroms per game, he needs 43 games to catch Beasley in rebounding but has plenty of time to do so. Woods is only a sophomore. His field-shooting percentage is a hefty .602 and ranks him tops among Aggie regulars. As testament to his tremendous defensive abilities wit ness his 102 blocked shots thus far in his young career. Woods has had career scoring highs of 24 points twice — against Vermont in December 1978 and against Santa Barbara in December 1979 — and pulled down 19 re bounds against Texas Lutheran in December. On December 15, 1978 Wright hit both his highs, 27 points and 21 re bounds against Nevada-Las Vegas. That game was in the Golden Gate Invitational tournament and, cou pled with his output in the finals win over San Francisco, gave Wright 39 points and 30 rebounds. His play netted him Sports Illus- trated’s National Player of the Week recognition. and 30 rebounds in that same meet. A little subtraction shows that’s Smith’s highest rebound total (21 against Las Vegas) but he scored 33 points against Southwestern Louisiana for his high point total. If those numbers aren’t awesome enough then consider that freshman Claude Riley is a ready reliever. In his games thus far, Riley has man aged to score 14 in a game against Vermont and pull down 11 rebounds against North Texas State. He’s aver aging 5.1 ppg and 3.9 rebounds per game. Oddly enough, Smith had identic al scoring and rebounding figures in the San Francisco game, but scored ten less overall to end with 29 points “If any part of ‘The Wall’ crum bles, well, Claude would be in there — and we’d still be ‘The Wall, ”’ said head coach Shelby Metcalf.
