AUSTIN — A Milam County
former who camped in the Capitol
during a week-long protest has
apologized to former attorney gen
eral John Hill for voting against him
in 1978 when Hill opposed Bill
Clements for governor.
Hill accepted Charlie Fitts’ apol
ogy on Friday, a week after the
former began his hunger strike. He
vowed he would neither eat nor
leave until Hill arrived.
Hill, who had been in Dallas all
week, went directly to the Capitol
from the airport with his son and
3-year-old grandson. About 75 Hill
supporters cheered the former at
torney general as he stepped out of
the second floor elevator.
“This is my grandson, John
Graham Hill,” he said. “He’s 3 years
old and he will live to be 107. Let’s
hope he doesn’t live to see another
Republican governor.”
“Did you bring me a cooked
crow?” the farmer asked Hill.
John, Clements made us some
promises and he didn’t keep those
promises. He’s not a man of his
word. I want to apologize. ”
“You don’t owe me anything,”
Hill replied. “I’m just sorry you had
to torture yourself. I’m just glad
you’re back in the Democratic Party
where you belong. One thing you
can always be sure of — the Demo
crats will take care of all the
people.”
The husky former then sat on the
floor with Hill’s grandson and
munched on turkey and fruit Hill
had brought.
Fitts told Hill he had realizedM
the big oil industry was reatyil
control of state goveniment,
had also found out that organisl|
labor can help.
“1 found out it’s the bigi
byists who run this state," he sill
“I’ll do my best to elect Democrat!
I don’t think the people of Texas#!
ever let the big oil companies 1b j'
another governor’s seat.”
Fitts, 46, then said hewasg
home to Rockdale. “ But we famet
aren’t through yet,” he said.
Hill told reporters every Dei»
cratic administration had progressa j r
in Texas, and said Clementswas®
doing a good job. But he said li
