Bible, great Aggie and Texas Longhorn coach of the early part of the century, died Saturday at the age of 88. Listed among the great coaches of the game of football and enshrined in at least seven football halls of fame, Bible produced some of his greatest teams at Texas A&M. Coaching eleven years during the span 1917-1928 at A&M, Bible compiled a record of 72 wins, 19 losses and nine ties. He is the only Aggie football coach (with four years service or more) not to suffer a los ing season. At A&M his teams picked up five Southeast Conference (SWC) foot ball titles and finished three seasons undefeated: In two of those seasons Bible’s charges were unbeaten, un tied and unscored on. Little known to many football fans is the fact that in that span of years at A&M Bible also coached the Aggie basketball team. One year after coach Bill Driver brought Ag- gieland its only undefeated cage season, Driver resigned and Bible took over at the insistence of the student body. In his seven years at the helm Bible collected 91 wins, 46 losses and three SWC titles. He is thus the only A&M coach, besides current coach Shelby Metcalf to bring more than one SWC trophy to Aggieland in basketball. His 1923 seniors, with the Driver-led 1920 season, had four consecutive SWC titles under their belt and named to the All-SWC team from that squad was E. King Gill, the original Aggie Twelfth Man. Bible was born in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and gained his degree at Carson-Newman College. Before coming to A&M he coached at Mississippi College and L.S.U. After his stint at A&M, Bible went to Nebraska where in eight years he produced six Big Six Conference champions. He then spent his last ten coaching years at the University of Texas bringing the Orange three SWC No. 1’s. He stayed at Texas as Athletic Director until 1957 when he retired and was replaced by Dar rell Royal. He was named the recipient of the Alonzo Stagg trophy and re ceived the New York Touchdown Club’s award for outstanding service to football in 1954. He served as a member of the NCAA football rules committee for 25 years. Bible is survived by a son and a daughter. Services were set for 3 p.m. today in Austin. —Tony Qallucci Bri By TONY G Sports 1 “I was concemei ready to play ball after being in the fore the game. North Texas State University hosted Texas Tech, LeTourneau, and Texas A&M in the meet. Bob Santini, a wrestler-coach, said the team performance was outstanding as the Ags pinned the NTSU Eagles 28-18, the Tech Raiders, 44-11, and LeTourneau, 30-15. “The most outstanding thing is that this is our rebuilding year,” ^ Santini said. “We started 5 4- freshmen on our 10-man team. >♦- The three wins boost the season J record for the Aggie wrestlers to ^ * * * * * * * * * * * * * weekend.
