Hudspeth County Judge Doyle L. Ziler said Monday oil companies 1 have been very tight-lipped about V their operations, but judging from the amount of activity the past year, he felt more wildcats may be drilled in the sparsely populated county. » “It’s a very hot area right now, ” he * said. “They’re going over it with a fine-tooth comb.” Heretofore, neither Hudspeth nor its western neighbor, El Paso County, has had any oil or natural gas production. Pat Bramlett, the Hudspeth county clerk, and El Paso real estate agents, reported an increase in min eral lease transactions filed in this Hudspeth county seat, and oil com pany crews were seen conducting seismograph tests in the area. Several independent oil produc tion firms were reported to be in volved, along with Texaco, in the ex ploration. Reportedly most of the interest is in the possibility of natural gas in an area lying south of Interstate 10 in Hudspeth County. The Midland District office of the Texas Railroad Commission issued a wildcat drilling permit to Transt)- cean Oil Inc., headquartered ’in Houston, and Border Exploration Co. obtained pennits for two 1,500 core samples in the county, all since last summer. Border’s permits were for drilling 34 miles southeast of Sierra Blanca and 42 miles southeast of Sierra Blanca. However, TransOcean official Bob Mates said Monday the pennit, to drill a wildcat 8,000 feet deep 24 miles northwest of Fort Hancock, re sulted in a dry hole. Asked whether |that was the end of TransOcean’s ex ploration in the area, Mates said, “as far as that well goes. He did not know whether other wells would be drilled. Tipperary Corp. also obtained a permit to drill a core sample to a 3,050-foot depth 10 miles southwest of Dell City. The Railroad Commission office in Midland reported no drilling per mits for El Paso County. Several years ago oil exploration conducted in the Lower Rio Grande Valley below El Paso resulted in no discov eries. McGregor Range, the military reservation land located north of El Paso in New Mexico, is another pos sible site of exploration interest, ac cording to the Army. GAY LINE 693-1630 Information & Referral Mon-Thurs 8-10 p.m. Joe Arciniega 74 ‘Shotgun Willie’ caught at Si 1 after promoting 55 mph limil ‘c ments of 1972 and that female athletes are being denied oppor tunities and benefits afforded male athletes. Because of a 1979 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, students are required first to submit a complaint to the organizatibn involved. If relief is not granted voluntarily, a lawsuit can be filed later. Betty Wheeler, attorney for the 24 women athletes, said, “I would think that if by May things have not changed, these parties might very well take the matter to court.” The complaint lists 12 specific al legations of non-compliance and re quests that charges be investigated immediately, that the students be apprised of the progress and that the school bring its program into com pliance at once. The Department of Health Educa tion and Welfare issued final guidelines on Title IX in December, noting that scholarship funds be allo cated to men and women on partici pation ratio. Among the complaints listed: — Men’s athletic programs re ceived $93,700 in scholarship money for 1979-80 versus a $15,380 alloca tion for women. — $158,668 was allocated for men’s travel expenses compared to $27,100 for women. — $143,401 in funding is available for men’s coach salaries versus $24,824 for women’s coaches. Myron Dees, athletic director, said there are 225 men and 60 women in the West Texas athletic program. On that basis, the women should receive 21 percent of the money funneled to athletics. Cur rently, figures indicate the women receive about 14 percent of the fund ing. The complaint further alleges the women have not received parity in training help, sports publicity and game scheduling, arid that because women are discouraged from par ticipating in sports the number of female athletes has been artifically depressed.
