Time banned in grocery stores
United Press International
TYLER — Shoppers frequenting outlets
of one southern grocery chain won’t find
Time magazine among publications facing
them at the checkout counter.
The publication has been banned from
the Brookshire Grocery Co. for six months
because it named the Ayatollah Khomeini
as its Man of the Year.
Company president Bruce Brookshire
said the ban involved 62 stores in Arkansas,
Louisiana and Texas.
“We were startled and dismayed that a
(magazine such as Time would come out
jwitb a cover picture of that man,” Brook-
jshire said. “Khomeini is an enemy toeven-
|thing the United States stands for.
“He’s holding American’s hostage and
:blackmailing our nation, and Time maga-
; zine did him an honor of placing his picture
ion the front cover. I’m sure their intention
was not to honor him, but we feel it can be
imisinterpreted by many people.”
Brookshire said he wrote the editors of
Time to advise them of his action but had
received no response.
